About the Position: Serve as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

Duties
Plans and manages all aspects of a comprehensive safety and occupational health program.
Provides guidance on the reduction of hazardous material used at facilities and implements procedures for disposing of hazardous wastes.
Inspects civil works projects, locks and dams, civil works construction sites, storage and material handling operations.
Investigates and prepares statistical data on mishaps involving personnel or damage to machinery, tools, materials or equipment.
Develops and provides technical safety training to supervisors and employees using a wide variety of materials, publications, exhibits, protective devices, and visual aids.
Attends pre contract award discussions and surveys compliance of awarded contract to assure safety of government personnel and equipment.
Works with the District Safety Officer and facility manager on safety and occupational health requirements, standards, and procedures.

- Must possess valid state and Government driver's permit to operate motor vehicles in accomplishing assigned duties.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualify for GS07:
Specialized Experience: Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, which includes conduct safety inspections at industrial sites; make recommendations to improve safety on operation and maintenance projects; complete safety training for First Aid and CPR and Fire Extinguisher; research historical statistics to compile report on safety mishaps/accidents.

Education: I have successfully completed one full academic year of graduate-level education with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene). (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Superior Academic Achievement: I have successfully completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) OR degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology AND am claiming Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - You must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - You must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - You may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/). Education/Specialized Exp Combination: I have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have some graduate education as described in B, but less than the required one year. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.).
