The primary purpose of this position is to serves a critical role of Science and Technology (S&T) leadership, advocacy, and coordination for the service.
Duties
The Chief Science Officer (CScO) serves a critical role of Science and Technology (S&T) leadership, advocacy, and coordination for the service. The CScO's role crosses the spectrum of scientific, engineering, and technical matters entailed in research, analysis, development and evaluation of surveillance, tactical warning satellite operations, space control, space lift, and cyberspace requirements definition, exercises, training and testing. The incumbent is: the Focal Point for Science, Technology, and Research-related (STR) activity and investments within the service; key interlocutor for USSF on Science, Technology, and Research-related activity and investments within the DAF eco-system. The CScO integrates effort and represents USSF within DAF; and a senior leader within CTIO, advising the L2. The CScO spans silo boundaries to represent CTIO within USSF and beyond, providing integrative oversight across Directorates to gain maximum impact for resources. The CScO accomplishes results through a broad variety of means consonant with the expertise and seniority of role.

- PROBATIONARY PERIOD. An individual's initial SL career appointment becomes final only after the individual successfully completes a 1-year probationary period.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: Eligibility will be based upon a clear showing the applicant has training, education and experience of the scope and quality sufficient to effectively carry-out the duties of the position. Candidates must exemplify the corporate perspective, leadership vision, broad experience and character needed in the Civilian Senior Executive Service corps not only to satisfy the immediate vacancy, but future vacancies which will occur in a variety of organizations, functions and locations.
MANDATORY TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (NTE 2 Pages per MTQ): A supplemental statement must be submitted separately addressing each TQ. TQs must provide specific examples that address relevant experience and accomplishments. Applicants should focus on recent experience, education, and training, as some Recruitment Panel members may consider experience that's over 10 years old to be outdated. Applicants must reflect superior technical qualifications demonstrated through leadership and management in the following:
1.Demonstrated ability to work across a range of stakeholders within USSF, DAF, the joint and intelligence communities to establish scientifically sound research, policy, investments, and applications for space. Demonstrated experience creating and engaging in partnerships to pursue science and technology to support the warfighter by interacting effectively with diverse and wide-ranging mission partners including (but not limited to) the academic community, international allies, the intelligence community, operations, civilian and commercial space.
2.Documented research record relevant to space and a profile of continuing active engagement (via writing, lectures, research, teaching) in space-relevant science and technology. Demonstrated ability to integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines (e.g., physics, mathematics, dynamics) to provide cogent scientific assessment of options to meet current and future warfighter needs.
Education
For 0800, General Engineering Series:
a. A professional engineering degree from an accredited institution is required. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

General Physical Science (1301) series requires: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; or a combination of education and experience.

- Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
