Serves as a Lead Medical Technician in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service of a multidisciplinary, university-affiliated medical center under direct supervision of the Supervisory Medical Technologist. They independently perform duties involving phlebotomy techniques for both in and outpatients; accessioning specimens; performing other procedures necessary for appropriate specimen receipt. Provides technical oversight for approximately 5 employees on evenings or nights as assigned.

Duties include but are not limited to: Collects, labels, and processes a variety of specimens (drawing blood by means of venipuncture, obtaining urine and other specimens) Performs a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (such as venipuncture) Performs more complex patient care procedures such as collecting sterile specimens, collection of urine for chain of custody (legal) urine drug screens, processes specimen and paperwork appropriately and provides instructions to patients for specimen collection Maintains appropriate skills for the care of the adult and geriatric population/patient Provides clinical support and assists physicians/providers and nurses as needed Participates with and assists physicians and nurses in a patient medical emergency Maintains examination rooms with medical equipment, supplies and forms. Supplies are ordered from SPD as needed and needle boxes are replaced when needed. Cleans exam table daily with appropriate cleaner Maintains laboratory equipment and controls supplies. Ensures that a sufficient supply of reagents, standards and controls are available at all times by ordering an adequate supply or preparing a variety of specialized solutions or reagents Using established procedures, calibrates, controls, and maintains a variety of instrumentation and laboratory equipment Maintains appropriate safety documentation on equipment/refrigerator as directed Communicates with all individuals in a courteous, tactful, helpful, ethical and understanding manner Communicates with all individuals in a courteous, tactful, helpful, and timely manner Reports all patient complaints (pain, environment or dissatisfaction with service provided) to the Laboratory Manager Distribute and balance the workload among employees Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and make available written instructions, reference materials and supplies Give on the job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices Maintain a current knowledge and answer questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. and obtain needed information or decisions Check on work in progress or spot check work not requiring review (e. g., filing or direct services) and review completed work Amend or reject work not meeting established standards Report to supervisor on performance, progress and training needs of employees, and on behavior problems Provide information to supervisor as requested concerning promotions, reassignment, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs Work Schedule: 3pm-11:30PM, rotating weekends and holidays Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position Position Description/PD#: Lead Medical Technician- Lead Phlebotomist/PD09383A Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not Authorized Financial Disclosure Report: Not required

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/26/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: is (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. To qualify at the GS-06 level, you must possess one-half year of directly related graduate education. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION). OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-06 level for this series. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pushing and reaching over head, and manual dexterity. Position requires lifting up to 20 pounds, and transferring patients and objects. Employee may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures; and utilize all safety practices and equipment in compliance with local and accrediting agency.
