Serves as a Medical Technician in the Pathology and Laboratory Service Line of a multidisciplinary, university-affiliated medical center. Primary duties include customer service, receiving and accessioning specimens from various locations, preparing specimens for shipment, and performing minimally as well as moderately complex testing.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Maintains Equipment/Supplies/Facilities: 15 percent
Maintains the central accessioning area facilities and equipment and monitors the supply inventory. Ensures that a sufficient inventory of required materials is available at all times by ordering from commercial sources or by advising the area coordinator accordingly. Processes requisitions, receives and stores shipments noting damage, contamination, other pre-analytic variables, shortages or other errors in shipment. Reconciles shipments with original orders. Drafts and submits written report of all noted discrepancies. Packages products for shipment or for pick up by courier. Monitors specimens, equipment and the environment for contamination. Using established procedures, calibrates, controls, nd maintains a variety of instrumentation and laboratory equipment. When calibration falls outside acceptable limits, incumbent uses independent judgment in adjusting either the procedure or the mechanical device used in the determination to bring the procedures into acceptable quality control.
Maintains Laboratory Records:15 percent
Maintains and controls Iaboratory records. Maintains comprehensive records of written and practical quality control measures to monitor all systems/processes for significant change that could indicate discrepancies or control of results. Incumbent uses information to take corrective measures to correct deviations for established quality control Iimits. Performs proficiency survey testing as a check on accuracy of laboratory results. Records information pertaining to the storage of specimens or reagents and completes appropriate tracking/inventory system information. Maintains records of results and related documents. Maintains records describing results pertaining to tests and examinations performed. Audits records to ensure appropriate classification, quantity, catalog information, etc. Prepares production or other reports as scheduled or requested by the supervisor.
Work Schedule: Full-time, 8:00am-4:30pm rotating weekends and holidays and 3:00pm-11:30pm Monday-Friday rotating holidays.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/24/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-5) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. To qualify at the GS-06 level, you must possess one-half year of directly related graduate education. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION). OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-06 level for this series. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE AND COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION).

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements:
The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as prolonged standing, bending over equipment, reaching for supplies or materials, and lifting moderately heavy items such as centrifuges and record boxes (or occasionally lifting heavier items such as reagent packs). The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as dexterity (to perform intricate collection or analysis procedures) and color vision.
