About the Position: This position is located at the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC).
Duties
Manufacture parts and complete items of equipment from raw stock of different kinds of metals and metal alloys and perform all the machining work required in the manufacturing of castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications.
Study single, sets, and series of blueprints, drawings and sketches featuring orthographic, isometric, and other projections of items to be worked.
Set up, prove out and operate a wide variety of NC/CNC machine tools to include multi axis machines to perform 1st pc acceptance for production run.
Set up, prove out, and operate all types of conventional machine tools such as lathes, bench, plain, or universal milling machines, shapers, planers, internal and external grinders, drill presses and radial drills.
Operate the NC/CNC machine to complete the entire work assignment, if the machining operation requires extensive manual input or precise nonstandard machining operations.
Resolve problems concerning complex machining operations or procedures and suggest new alternative methods, if appropriate.
Operate machine tools to cut, drill, bore, tap, ream, shape, turn, mill, grind, hone and lap items.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Subject to pre-employment and annual physical examination.
Qualifications
Position may be filled as a temporary promotion or detail NTE 12 months by a current permanent Army employee. Temporary promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Position may be made permanent without further competition. Employees are not eligible for a detail in the OCONUS area unless already residing in the same overseas area (foreign or non-foreign) as the position being filled.
Employees currently located in OCONUS (foreign or non-foreign) are not eligible for a detail to a CONUS position.

This position will be filled at the WG-10 or WG-11 level. If selected at the WG-10 level, noncompetitive promotion to the full performance level is authorized.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Machinist without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally incudesperforming machining operations using both conventional and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine tools; setting up and operating a variety of conventional machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, or universal milling machines, internal and external grinders, drill presses and radial drills; reading blueprints, drawings and sketches; knowledge of the use of tooling required to produce the features, tolerances and surface finishes to specifications; applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions; and performing precision machining for manufacture of tooling, fixtures, and engineering prototype components. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts: Work requires standing, bending and reaching; and frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally objects weighing as much as 45 pounds. Hoists, hand trucks, and other workers are available for heavier items.
Working Conditions: Works in a well lighted, heated, ventilated shop. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises, and fumes. Subject, to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
