The Nurse Practitioner (NP) Dermatology position is located in the Medical Service at the Jamaica Plain campus location. This is a part-time 20 hour per week position. This position may also be filled by a Physician Assistant (PA). All interested PAs must apply through announcement CBTD-12228763-24-HL.
Duties
The NP provides guidance and continuity for Dermatology Fellows and Attending Physicians in the outpatient clinics in their provision of care to patients. S/he will assist them in addressing all aspects of care by the promotion of safe practices as well as the encouragement of effective use of VA resources. In addition, s/he will have clinics located at the West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, and Brockton campuses along with the Bedford
enclave as applicable.
The NP provides comprehensive Dermatological care including, but not limited to, medical, diagnostic, and procedural Dermatology. The NP is accountable for adhering to the established policies and standards of care, including complete skin, hair, and nails examination. S/he utilizes advanced skills in assessment, problem identification and clarification, treatment, planning, and implementation of the patient's treatment plan. The NP will have prescription authority. S/he provides care for men and women Veterans ranging in age from 18 through the geriatric years, taking into consideration diagnosis, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural issues. The NP works in collaboration with other members of the health care team to design and continuously improve the quality of care delivered to Veterans. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Providing medical and general dermatologic care to new patients/consults and established patients. This includes diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for a wide array of dermatologic conditions, including but not limited to skin cancer screening, eczema, psoriasis, acne, skin cancer.
Performing minor surgical procedures including skin biopsies, cryotherapy, electrodessication and curettage, and nail clippings.
Maintaining appropriate documentation for clinical visits and patient contact, adhering to VHA documentation and compliance standards.
Dermatologic prescription management including refills, new medications, treatment monitoring as indicated.
Timely results management, including formulating a treatment plan and patient notification.
Addressing patient secure message questions and refill requests.
Professionalism, adhering to established polices, standards of care and standards of practice, and in interactions with patients, health professionals, and team members.
Serving as a Dermatology clinician in the Referral Coordination Team and reviewing Dermatology patient community care requests (to receive Dermatology care outside VA).
Triaging consults based on national standards and providing instructions on where (clinics and providers) to schedule new patients into.

This position is in the Excepted Service.
The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will recommend the grade and salary for new appointments based on the candidate's education and experience. For internal selectees being promoted, the board will determine grade and HR will determine step in accordance with policy.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Nurse Practitioners: A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected. Accepted Specialty certifications for this position are: Family NP, Adult NP, Adult-Gerontology NP, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP.
Preferred Experience:
Comprehensive Dermatological care including, but not limited to medical diagnostic, and procedural Dermatology experience preferred
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: Position is subject to a pre-employment physical and medical examination. This position requires: lifting, carrying; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (8 hours); standing (8 hours); repeated bending; working alone; protracted or irregular hours of work and occasional emotional strain. It also requires intermittent lifting, carrying, straight pulling and straight pushing up to 45 lbs.
