This position is assigned to the Construction, Maintenance & Operations section of Facilities Management Service at the Seattle & American Lake campuses and all associated CBOC's and Valor's of VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS).
Duties
Builds load bearing & non load bearing walls using wood and metal studs.
Finish and repair drywall.
Construct, install, and repair window frames, shelving, acoustical ceilings, door jambs, doors and other appropriate hardware such as locksets, hydraulic door closures and panic hardware, construct and repair and install casework, plastic laminate countertops, shelving and other work surfaces.
Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, shop drawings, and as built blueprints from which he/she lays out and plans work assignments.
Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement that the employee signs.
Ability to work from sketches, work orders, basic blueprints, and instructions which are complete in terms of type of job required and material and methods to be used.
Uses measuring tapes, squares, and levels.
Uses carpentry tools to plan, lay out, measure, and cut.
Constructs and installs materials according to dimensional requirements and specifications.
Install and repair floors such as but not limited to vinyl composition tile, carpet squares, rubber floor material, linoleum and ceramic tiles.
Repair and install the following types of roofing: torch down, metal and composition materials.
Obtain formal quotes from vendors needed to complete work assignments or shop supplies.
Uses and operates a variety of hand and power tools such as hammers, hand saws, drills, planes, routers, screwdrivers, power nailers and fasteners, glue guns, metal shears, screw guns, power saws, and power sanders and planes.
Selects the proper tools to be used and determines methods and techniques based on established practices or specific instructions from the supervisor or a higher graded worker.
Maintaining his/her tools in safe, working order.
Construct dust containment compartments and know the proper use of negative air machines and HEPA filters.
Assembles lists of material and supplies.
Forms, places, and finishes concrete sidewalks, curbs, approaches and ramps, as well as construct dust containment compartments.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

Physical Requirements: Physical Effort: Incumbent is required to stand/walk for long periods of time and must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. or more. Work is often performed in awkward and cramped positions and on ladders, scaffolds and scissors lifts. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and work in in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. The incumbent must be able to wear a respiration device.
Working Conditions: Working conditions for the incumbent vary from sensitive patient care areas such as the Marrow Transplant Unit (MTU) to the Engineering Shops and to outdoor areas in all weather conditions. Occasionally the incumbent will be required to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment which can cause various levels of discomfort. Incumbent is responsible for maintaining his/her tools in safe, working order.
