About the Position: These positions are located at the Army Medical Center Darnall, Fort Cavazos, TX. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Utilize outpatient coding guidelines to codes disease and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures in a wide range of ambulatory/inpatient/outpatient settings and specialties. Selection of the appropriate codes and modifiers requires determining from several possible codes and references the one which most accurately describes the proper primary and subsequent diagnosis when multiple diagnoses are present. Ensure that coding is performed in a manner which allows input and manipulation of data within MHS Genesis (the military’s Electronic Health Record). Oversee coding function for MHS Genesis and trains other personnel on proper, accurate and current coding and documentation practices. Analyze all pertinent record information for each visit and assigns all appropriate diagnosis, Evaluation and Management, Supply and Procedure codes which provides a synopsis of the health care services rendered during the patient's visit.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a coding certification from either the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) within 9 months of employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Minimum Qualifications GS-06: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing medical terminology to code medical records and reviewing medical records for accuracy. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Medical Records Administration or Health Information Administration. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. Minimum Qualifications GS-07: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes coding diseases, injuries, and/or medical procedures in accordance with established coding regulations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Medical Records Administration or Health Information Administration. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. Minimum Qualifications GS-08: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes reviewing and analyzing medical data; coding diseases, injuries, and/or medical procedures in accordance with established coding regulations; performing audits of coded medical records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Medical Records Administration or Health Information Administration. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. Licensure/Certification: Coding certification from either the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is highly desired.
