Duties
Perform a variety of technically complex duties involved with auditing, reviewing, and analyzing medical data and medical records to ensure facility is in compliance.
Supervise Medical Records Technicians (Coders), Contract Coders, and Medical Data Technicians. Assign and distribute work to subordinates based on priorities, difficulty of assignments, and the capabilities of employees.
Analyze a wide range of inpatient, outpatient, and APV records pertaining to injuries, diseases, and medical/surgical procedures.
Review progress notes, doctor’s orders, consultation reports, laboratory and radiology reports, etc., to ascertain all diagnoses, operations, and complications are recorded in the proper terminology.
Conduct group education briefings on coding; assists in the development and deployment of entry level training programs.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation may be required.
- Selectees may be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- A pre-placement medical examination may be required.
- Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

Minimum Qualifications for Supervisory Medical Records Technician (Coder):
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing medical records coding or analysis; advising others on medical records coding procedures; and performing medical records administration. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
