This position is located in the Grounds Shop of the VA Medical Center in Columbia, SC.
Duties
Using a backhoe to repair irrigation systems;
Repairing fencing, concrete sidewalks, roadways, etc.
Mixing, placing, and finishing concrete for sidewalks and building concrete forms;
Spraying chemicals and fertilizer;
Clearing ice, snow, and debris during inclement weather using attachments on heavy equipment;
Raking leaves, cutting and trimming trees and shrubs, and removing stumps;
Picking up trash and emptying trash containers;
Grading gravel parking lots;
Operating and maintaining tractors and skid-steer loaders with and without attachments to maintain grounds and roads;
Operating mowers, aerators, impact hammers, auger and broom attachments, posthole diggers, front-end loaders, dozer blades, and backhoes;
Loading and driving a 5-ton dump truck;
Operating, controlling, cleaning, adjusting, and mixing fuel for gasoline, diesel, riding, and heavy walking type mowers;
Maintaining and operating tractors, street sweepers, utility vehicles, skid steer loader equipment, dump truck, aerial lift, truck/fork lift, etc.;
Excavating, backfilling, grading, and leveling earth to rough specifications;
Performing related duties as required.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm.

Qualifications
You must have a valid state driver's license and the ability to perform the duties of the Tractor Operator without more than normal supervision.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Tractor Operator will often be required to make repairs using great physical effort to lift, pull, push, and carry objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes. The position requires the ability to climb, crawl, and bend, and to stand, crouch, and stoop for extended periods of time. The employee must be able to lift 50 pounds or more. The Tractor Operator will work outside and inside in conditions that will often be dirty, dusty, and greasy; in areas with poor lighting and ventilation; in hot and cold temperatures; and in areas where unpleasant fumes and odors are present. The employee will be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, and infectious diseases and will be required to use personal protective equipment.
