This Lead Registered Respiratory Therapist position reports to the Medicine/Respiratory Care service at the VA Lexington Healthcare System, located at the Lexington Bowling campus. This position is full time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

Duties include but not limited to: Provides effective education and training to patients, students, and co-workers as appropriate Performs both fundamental and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for adult and geriatric patients Performs emergency and acute respiratory therapy procedures in accordance with hospital and respiratory department guidelines Helps develops and maintain SOPs, policies, guidelines, and to help ensure departmental survey readiness Assembles, checks, and corrects malfunctions and performs quality controls on respiratory therapy equipment and technology-based equipment Acts as the supervisor and/or oversees work of lower graded associates to accommodate request for scheduling, AL and SL, in the absence of the Assistant Chief and/or Chief Provides staffing coverage and direct patient care when and where necessary at duel-division locations May work in all areas of the Respiratory Therapy department Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 3:00pm - 11:30pm (additional off tour hours may be required) Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor. Licensure: Applicants appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT. Credential: Applicants appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Lead Registered Respiratory Therapist, GS-12 Experience: Candidate must have one year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at the level. RRTs at this grade level in this assignment have experience demonstrating advanced practice skills and clinical judgement across many areas of respiratory care both inpatient and outpatient. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Ability to assign personnel and tasks to be accomplished in a manner that assures completion of the workload Ability to oversee and direct clinical guidance in a manner that assures completion of the workload Ability to communicate with individuals of varying backgrounds to solve problems and provide conflict resolution Ability to recommend uncommon or atypical interventions Ability to recommend ways to improve patient care and operations through independent research and evaluation of new equipment and therapies Preferred Experience: Proficient in consult management and utilization of both AcuStaf and VATAS. Experience with Ventilator Management Protocols, critical care, and Outpatient Services such as Home Oxygen, PFTs and a CPAP Clinic. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of responsibilities including coordination of multiple priorities, setting priorities, organizing and adjusting workflow and meeting deadlines. Skill in applying fact-finding, problem-solving methods and techniques sufficient to identify interrelated program problems, draw conclusions and recommend appropriate action or solutions, both verbally and in writing to improve the efficiency and effectiveness. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with people from a variety of backgrounds, including peers, supervisors, clinical and administrative chief, top management, etc. References: VA Handbook 5005/141 Part II Appendix G-11 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); straight pulling (1 hour); pushing (1 hour) reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (2 hours); standing (2 hours); repeated bending (2 hours); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted).
