This position serves as a Supervisor of Complimentary and Integrative Health (SCIH) in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service at the Lexington VA Health Care System, Lexington, KY. The Medical Center is classified as a Level 1B Complexity, indicative of large levels of volume, patient risk, teaching, and research. The Supervisor is assigned responsibility for serving as the subject matter expert in Chiropractic and Acupuncture care.
Duties
The Supervisor of Complimentary and Integrative Health (SCIH) has advanced knowledge of contemporary chiropractic and acupuncture care across multiple areas of practice and the ability to apply this advanced knowledge to provide clinical guidance to Staff Chiropractors, Staff Acupuncturists, and other healthcare providers.VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.

The SCIH is responsible for independently providing assessment and treatment interventions to outpatients received through other healthcare providers and patient self-referrals. The incumbent establishes a diagnosis within the scope of practice. Incumbent formulates a treatment plan and goals and is responsible for implementation, modification, and documentation of treatment.
The SCIH coordinates and implements highly specialized treatment programs within his/her assigned clinic, based on best practices for patient/client management, to relieve pain, restore or enhance performance, and maximize independence in functional abilities.
The SCIH recognizes the appropriateness of responses to treatment based on indications, precautions, and contraindications. Recognizes when to refer conditions outside the scope of physical therapy practice to the appropriate provider.
The SCIH demonstrates skill in utilizing appropriate screening and evaluation techniques required to appropriately provide and direct patient care. The SCIH demonstrates knowledge of clinical signs and symptoms to make appropriate referrals for further medical attention/assessment as indicated.
The incumbent manages his/her caseload with concern for the complexity of treatment required. The SCIH performs as an autonomous practitioner with administrative oversight through the Chief of Musculoskeletal Rehab.
Incumbent maintains timely data input utilizing care plans, initial assessments, and/or specialty protocols as part of an ongoing process in coordination with other key interdisciplinary staff to provide effective patient care.
The incumbent establishes and maintains contact with other key staff involved in patient care via written, telephone, and personal communication on a regular basis.
Incumbent exercises initiative, discretion, adaptability, and sound professional judgment.
SCIH will develop and implement policies and procedures to address focused clinical needs within the section.
SCIH will demonstrate autonomy in performing supervisory responsibilities that includes assigning work to employees, monitoring workload and clinical volume, reviewing work of employees to assure accuracy and validity of submissions, assuring adequate clinical staffing, imposing disciplinary measures, and monitoring clinical privileges.
SCIH will demonstrate knowledge of human resources administration, including such functions as the ability to interview and select qualified applicants, monitor, and evaluate performance, and maintain effective labor management relations within scope of responsibility.
SCIH will effectively supervise, direct, and manage a diverse complimentary and integrative health staff.
SCIH will demonstrate skill in forging positive interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution.
SCIH will demonstrate the ability to analyze clinically appropriate data effectively to optimize quality, performance, and productivity within the section.
SCIH will demonstrate the ability to set priorities, delegate tasks, solve problems, and meet multiple deadlines.
The incumbent will provide in-service and clinical training programs as assigned by the Chief of Musculoskeletal Rehab.
The incumbent will design, conduct, and evaluate educational experiences within specialty content area for staff members, taking an active role in literature searches, and seeks educational opportunities to enhance the Complimentary and Integrative Health Section, PM&RS, and the Medical Center.
The SCIH will represent the Complimentary and Integrative Health Section and PM&RS at various clinical and administrative meetings/rounds at the discretion of the Chief of Musculoskeletal Rehab.
The incumbent will actively support and positively promote all disciplines within PM&RS.
The SCIH will develop program planning, staff education/training, QI monitoring, and program evaluation within area of specialty.
The SCIH will develop and provide timely reports to the Chief of Musculoskeletal Rehab.
The incumbent will use the computer system for storing and retrieving electronic documents and files, transmitting, and receiving e-mail, activating printers, requesting leave, and accessing the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational, or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Chiropractor Basic Requirements:
a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
b. Education. Degree of Doctor of Chiropractic, or its equivalent, resulting from a course of education in chiropractic. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools or colleges approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Approved schools are:
(1) United States schools or colleges of chiropractic listed as accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education, at http://www.cce-usa.org/, or equivalent agency, in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.
(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
c. Licensure or Registration(1) Doctor of Chiropractic (Except Residents). Current, full and unrestricted license to practice chiropractic in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
d. English Language Proficiency. Doctors of Chiropractic appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Preferred Experience: Acupuncture License and Experience
Grade Determinations: Documentation submitted by the applicant is reviewed by a Professional Standards Board for grade recommendation. In addition to the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.
a. Associate Grade. None beyond the basic requirements.
b. Full Grade. Two years of full-time chiropractic practice or its equivalent. One year of full-time post-graduate residency specialty training from a chiropractic school or college accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education, or equivalent agency approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs is acceptable in lieu of the 2 years of practice. Candidate must have demonstrated the professional competence and performance necessary to provide independently the full range of clinical diagnosis and chiropractic treatment for the most prevalent neuro-musculoskeletal conditions including subluxation complex.
