This position is located within the Patient Accounts Section of the Business Office at the Northport VA VA Medical Center in Northport, NY. The Teller - Agent Cashier's primary duties involve collections via cash, check and credit card. Makes cash disbursements, issues convenience checks, and distributes salary checks.
Duties

Major duties include:
Maintains the cash flow so that adequate cash is on hand at all times to operate the daily cashier functions;
Determines the acceptability of payment documents and cash items, aided by knowledge of Treasury Department and Department of Veterans Affairs regulations;
Responsible for receipt and distribution of cash and the required recording of patient funds activity as well as identifying available individual account balances on a daily basis and medical restrictions when applicable;
Distributes convenience checks and employee travel vouchers;
Determines type of payment; i.e., Third Party, Means Test, Co-Payment or a combination of several types;
Prepares Field Station Receipts for collections using the correct reference numbers of patients' accounts and proper accounting information;
Posts/applies payments, stores payment data, reconciles daily deposits of funds and accommodates prepayments and refunds;
Responsible for planning and conducting all training activities as directed by the Supervisor and takes prompt action as necessary to modify and/or change existing practices;
Under the direction of the Supervisor, may participate in interviews of applications and provides input on recommended selections; assists in preparation of performance evaluations; makes recommendations for awards and/or disciplinary action; provides input on all leave requests, ensuring adequate cashier coverage will be maintained;
Analyzes work requirements and determines staff resources, equipment and other resources needed to accomplish work assignments;
Under the direction of the Supervisor, recommends adjustments and coordinates assignments as necessary to assure an even flow of work; assigns and explains work requirements to less experienced employees for new or changed policies, functions, goals and processes; establishes operating procedures and guides;
Assumes personal financial accountability for any monetary loss during the performance of duties;
Resolves technical problems not covered by precedents or established policies; and,
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position at the GS-6 level, you must meet the following:
Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Teller - Agent Cashier, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience is experience working as a teller or in a similar position performing duties such as handling financial transactions; processing collections and disbursements; correcting financial errors; posting appropriately and resolving minor technical problems; understanding debit and credit principles; maintaining balance and close accounts in an accounting system; analyzing accounts and recommending adjustments necessary to reconcile and balance accounts; performs customer service in person and by phone; knowledge of computer software (MS Word, MS Excel or similar software). NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work requires walking between building 200 and other buildings in the medical center to see Fiscal management, co-pay cashers, or patients at their ward location. Standing at the Agent Cashier window to speak to or hand funds to patients. Incumbent will sit at a desk to set up deposits and replenishments There is some lifting of books and cash boxes required. Incumbent may bend to put something in the safe.
