Duties
Major Duties: The purpose of this position is to operate one or more motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of over 26,000 pounds and operate gas- and diesel-powered heavy equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for the full range of engineering and equipment operator duties which include the following: Perform a variety of work that involves the operation of gasoline and diesel-powered heavy equipment. This includes the use of five yard dump trucks, ten yard dump trucks, truck-tractor with trailer, culvert flusher trucks, wheel loaders, back hoes and graders.-Operate end loader in the process of moving dirt and materials and filling trucks.-Operate five-yard dump trucks to remove snow from roads and parking lots during winter months.-Use of skid steer style tractors with a variety of attachments to build trails, boardwalks and in the rehabilitation of wetlands.-Use the grader, loader and dump truck to remove snow from roads and parking lots during winter months.-Use equipment for collection and disposal of solid waste and recyclable materials. Use equipment for roadside brushing, and rock scaling operations. -Perform safety checks and preventative maintenance; make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments. Replace chains, belts, cables, etc.-This position requires that the incumbent possess at least a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in order to operate commercial-type vehicles.
AREA INFORMATION: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 2,500) and Grand Marais. The duty station for these positions are at Munising and Grand Marais. Government housing may be available for rent. Amenities in Munising include basic shopping, medical facilities, and K-12 schools. Grand Marais has a population of less than 500 people and shopping is limited. K-12 schools are available in Grand Marais. Basic shopping and medical facilities for those at Grand Marais are available 60 miles away in Munising. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The winter season may extend from October to May and is often characterized by sub-zero temperatures and seasonal snowfall in excess of 150 inches. The area is rich in outdoor sporting activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, biking, camping, and skiing.
