Duties

MAJOR DUTIES: Leads a crew of 3-6 NPS employees, in performing, trail work, including resurfacing, maintenance, repair and construction of a variety of walls, trail bridges, abutments, causeways and other structures. Removal of hazard trees using specialized equipment. Rigging tasks in construction projects, using cables, ropes, slings, and chains, to include using heavy equipment to remove large rocks etc. Maintain and build back country pit toilets. Work on associated trail-side structures and facilities. Work with small engine maintenance and repair. Dirt and sand removal using a variety of mechanized medium and heavy equipment. Actively participates in the Park Safety Program and the Back Country Program Meetings, to include holding daily meetings, safety walk-arounds and the instruction and use of personal protective equipment to be worn at all times. Masonry: Performs work primarily in the construction, stabilization, and maintenance to historic and non-historic structures, mostly, on the park trail system. Masonry tasks include the maintenance, repair, and construction of walls (both single- and multi-tier), bridge abutments, causeways, riprap trail tread and other similar structures, using primarily dry-stone techniques. Carpentry: Performs carpentry work, primarily using heavy log and rough-sawn lumber, on trial structures such as log checks, footbridges, multi-use bridges, and boardwalks. Log work tasks involve the use of a chain saw to fell, buck, notch, and/or shape both native and pressure treated logs in the maintenance and construction of multi-use and foot bridges, water bars and retainer steps, crib walls and steps. Motor Vehicle and Equipment Operation: Transports tools, materials, employees, vehicles and equipment over 26,000 GVW to job sites and trailheads. Picks up supplies, loads, secures, and transports as required. Distributes and offloads supplies and equipment at job and storage sites. May operate power wheelbarrows, Bobcat and larger loaders, forklifts, stake-side trucks, single and tandem axle dump trucks, rollers, and tow material, trailers. Area Information: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 1800) and Grand Marais. The park encompasses 42 miles of Lake Superior shoreline and is renowned for its colorful sandstone cliffs, miles of beaches, waterfalls and streams, inland lakes, 100 miles of trails and the 1874 Au Sable Light Station. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The area is rich in public lands and outdoor opportunities. The duty stations for these positions are in Munising and Grand Marais. Government housing may be available for rent in Grand Marais. Amenities in Munising include grocery and convenience stores, medical clinic, and K-12 schools. Complete shopping and a regional medical center are in Marquette, Michigan, 43 miles west of Munising. Grand Marais has a population of less than 250 people and shopping is limited.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
