*This is a Tenure Track position. Academic tenure is based upon performance and approval of the faculty and may be considered after initial or subsequent 3-year appointment period. Selectee may be offered an initial appointment with tenure if their academic credentials warrant such action. Performs faculty duties in the Department of Operational Science in the Graduate School of Engineering and Management at AFIT.

Duties

Teaches graduate-level courses in operations management, logistics, supply chain management, and applied operations research which form parts of accredited masters and doctoral degree programs, as well as parts of professional continuing education programs. Develops courses and sequences of courses in the operational sciences for degree programs and continuing education, which meet the Air Force's dynamic educational needs. Plans and executes a program of research in the operational sciences. Works directly with Air Force and Department of Defense (DoD) organizations to meet research needs. Collaborates and works well with colleagues to accomplish individual and organizational research goals. Regularly publishes research results in archival journals and presents at technical conferences. Plans, directs, coordinates, and evaluates research programs of masters and doctoral students. Provides authoritative consultation in one or more areas of the operational sciences to Air Force and DoD organizations. Serves on department and school administrative and academic committees. Mentors and manages the educational progress of MS and PhD students. Provides annual written feedback and reports on MS and PhD students as prescribed by Air Force and AFIT Operating Instructions. Demonstrated professional knowledge of foundational and advanced topics associated with the operational sciences. These topics may include, but are not limited to: logistics, supply chain management, applied operations research, or operations management. Expertise in at least one of the following areas: logistics, supply chain management, inventory modeling, simulation, production or operations management, decision analysis, reliability or maintainability, business analytics, or applied operations research. Possess the ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, to include evenings, weekends and/or holidays
  • Shift work and emergency overtime may be required.
  • Employee must maintain current certifications.
  • Incumbent may be required to serve a one-year trial period.
  • Candidates are not required to have active duty service or veterans’ preference to be referred and considered. All qualified candidates who meet the recruitment assessment criteria will be referred to the selecting official.
  • The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication. (1 of 2)

  • Essential qualities expected of every Assistant Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management include the personal attributes of integrity, industry, cooperation, initiative, and breadth of intellectual interests.
  • Travel by military or commercial transportation to gather ideas for improving the curriculum, establish research contacts and agreements, conduct research, and present results of research may be required.
  • Initial appointment is under Schedule A appointing authority, Excepted Appointment Not-to-Exceed 3 years.
  • At the time of the expiration of the initial appointment an employee who adequately demonstrates professional competence can be extended in increments up to 3 years or for an indefinite period.
  • An initial appointment can be allowed to expire for an employee who does not adequately demonstrate professional competence.
  • The appointment cannot be converted to a permanent tenure in the competitive service.
  • This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.
  • All federal employees are required to have direct deposit.

  • Doctoral degree is required by the time employment begins (see Qualifications for required academic disciplines)
  • Relocation costs are not authorized.

Qualifications

Conditions of Employment Continued Term appointment may be extended to the maximum period allowed by law without further competition. NOTE: Current federal civilian employees may apply for this position and if selected, a break in service of at least 3 days may be required prior to appointment to this position. This civilian faculty duty period is normally 12 months, however a shorter duty period with a corresponding pro-rated salary (e.g., 10/12 of an annual salary for a 10-month duty period) may be required. Duties required periods of standing (typically not to exceed two hours in duration) walking, bending, and/or carrying of objects of less than 20 pounds. Qualifications An earned Doctorate degree in management, logistics, supply chain management, industrial engineering, engineering management, or related field is required before employment begins. Demonstrated professional knowledge of foundational and advanced topics associated with operational sciences. These areas include, but not limited to: logistics, supply chain management, applied operations research, or operations management. Expertise in at least one of the following areas: logistics, supply chain management, inventory modeling, simulation, production or operations management, decision analysis, reliability or maintainability, business analytics, or applied operations research. Possess the ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters. At the Assistant Professor Rank: For an initial appointment to the academic rank of Assistant Professor, applicants should have a strong potential for both teaching and research at the graduate level. Applicants should have a distinguished academic record and the background, commitment, and desire to teach graduate classes, conduct research, and publish. Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, quality of scholarship, and demonstrated service to educational institutions and the discipline commensurate with years in the discipline. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
