National Defense University (NDU) supports the joint warfighter by providing rigorous Joint Professional Military Education to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and select others in order to develop leaders who have the ability to operate and creatively think in an unpredictable and complex world. This is a Title 10 Excepted Service Appointment. Appointment is not to exceed 3 years with the possibility for extension.

Duties

The primary duty of the College of Information and Cyberspace (CIC) faculty is teaching core and elective graduate-level courses for senior leaders enrolled in a senior-level course of study in national security and cyberspace strategy/security, information, information technology, data analytics, strategic leadership. Other duties include: Maintaining academic currency through rigorous scholarship Participating in the development and implementation of the academic program Mentoring students and assessing their academic and professional performance Serving on committees and performing other College leadership duties as assigned Contributing to the professional development of faculty colleagues Developing and maintaining professional relationships with key stakeholders and decision-makers in Washington, DC and around the world. Promoting a climate that fosters respect among students, faculty, staff, and administration from a range of diverse backgrounds, ideas, and perspectives.

  • The position is governed by 10 USC 1595 and NDUI 1416.0l dated March 2017.
  • Must be able and willing to travel both domestically and internationally. Travel is seldom required. Less than 20 % of the time.
  • The incumbent must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI clearance.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: An earned master's degree (a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree preferred) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent) in a discipline directly related to national security or the college's mission and curriculum. Knowledge of national security and cyberspace strategy/policy, cyber security, cyber law, emerging technology, information operations/influence, data science/analytics, or artificial intelligence/machine learning. Evidence of excellence in teaching as a faculty member at an accredited college or university in a discipline related to the college's curriculum and mission. Research experience in a related field demonstrated through scholarship, publications, or outreach activities; recognition with academic, professional, or research communities. Professional knowledge of instructional best practices and experience in developing instructional materials, with emphasis on graduate-level teaching methodology and adult learning. Experience utilizing leadership and management skills in an academic setting or similar complex organization to include service in senior executive or management positions. Aptitude in collaboration across institutional boundaries and the ability to develop relationships; promote diversity and inclusion; and coordinate with leaders across government, industry, and academia. Criteria for Academic Rank: AD-1701-02: Assistant Professor: 1) an earned master's degree (a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree preferred) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent); 2) documented evidence of promise in teaching, with some graduate level teaching experience preferred. 3) scholarship/research resulting in the creation and sharing of new knowledge through teaching or publishing; and 4) aptitude in collaboration across institutional boundaries. AD-1701-03: Associate Professor of Practice: 1) an earned master's degree (a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree preferred) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent); 2) at least 7 years of outstanding performance as a senior-level practitioner in an agency of the federal government, professional staff member of a Congressional Committee, or senior level professional in the private sector with an outstanding record of public service, professional achievements in areas related to the college's curriculum and mission. Associate Professor: 1) an earned doctoral degree or equivalent terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent); 2) at least five years of full-time teaching experience at an accredited university, of which at least two years must be at the graduate level; 3) record of excellence and leadership of scholarship among peers and external recognition of excellence; and 4) record of advancement of institutional partnerships, relationships that leverage cross-component mission success, and networks of influence that contribute to national security. AD-1701-04 Professor of Practice: 1) an earned master's degree (a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree preferred) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent); 2) at least 10 years of outstanding performance as a senior-level practitioner in an agency of the federal government, professional staff member of a Congressional Committee, or senior level professional in the private sector with an outstanding record of public service, professional achievements in areas related to the college's curriculum and mission. Professor: 1) an earned doctoral degree or equivalent terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent); 2) at least eight years of full-time teaching experience at an accredited university, of which at least three years must be at the graduate level, with a sustained record of excellence and contributions to the curriculum; 3) sustained record of excellence and leadership of scholarship among peers and external recognition of excellence; 4) sustained record of advancement of institutional partnerships, relationships that leverage cross-component mission success, and networks of influence that contribute to national security. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
