Duties

You will operate boiler plants and auxiliary equipment to produce and control the amount of steam necessary to meet demands. You will consult plant procedures to verify safe, efficient, and economical use and care of operating tools and supplies. You will use technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams, schematics, or similar guides to complete assembly, troubleshooting, and layout of powered support systems. You will disassemble, examine utility equipment and components to identify excessive wear, deterioration, clearances, electrical shorts and continuity, defective wiring and connections, defective solid state devices and circuitry. You will determine maintenance procedures for utility plants and distribution systems (e.g., chilled water, steam, sanitary sewer, water, condensate). You will determine the technical properties of materials being worked to recommend modifications to procedures. You will use specialized test equipment to troubleshoot and identify utility system problems. You will plan the installation, modification, and repair of piping systems. You will oversee or perform the inspection, maintenance, operation, and repair of industrial or large scale commercial electrical generation equipment. You will lift, carry, set up, and tear down equipment to assist journeymen. You will adjust boiler plant equipment control mechanisms to verify optimal performance in accordance with equipment specifications. You will perform preventative maintenance, minor repairs, and housekeeping to keep plants operating in a safe and efficient manner. You will instruct personnel on the most efficient methods of operating cooling plants.

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • You are required to possess and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • A current Third Class Power Plant Operating Engineer Certification and/or Fifth Class Power Engineer Certification must be obtained within 18 months of appointment.
  • This position is run on a 7 day, two shift plan. Rotating shifts 365 day and may be subject to recall of duty and consider weather condition essential.
  • You will be required to frequent lift and carry boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing over 40 pounds with assistance of other workers or equipment.
  • You will be required to work inside and outside which is subject to prevailing weather conditions.
  • You will be subject to high and low temperatures, constant noise, dust, fumes, chemicals, soot, grease, rotating machinery and tight confined spaces.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.
