The Health Technician provides clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care and related activities in an Inpatient Acute Care setting at the South Texas Veteran's Health Care System.
Duties
As a Healthcare Technician (HCT), you will provide clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care and related activities in the 4B unit. The incumbent must possess the personal qualities, desire and attitude necessary to adapt to rapidly changing demands on time and workload and have the necessary skills to perform specific tasks/tests/procedures to meet patient healthcare needs. The HCT responsibilities will include, but is not limited to, obtaining and documenting patients' vital signs, performing EKG's, and inserting/discontinuing IV's. In addition, the HCT will be responsible for drawing blood and initiating the collection and submission of labs and other specimens as ordered by the nurse or physician. The HCT will move, lift, transfer, and transport patients as needed, and will be responsible for observing changes in patient condition and reporting signs and symptoms in such cases to a nurse. The HCT will assist physicians with specialized exams/procedures in preparing patients for procedure, handing instruments to the physician, providing emotional support to the patients, and cleaning equipment and rooms between procedures using proper infection control techniques. The HCT will report and/or document in the patients' electronic medical record observations of and treatment given to patients to ensure accurate records and quality of care. In the event of disturbed patient behavior, the HCT will assist in producing a safe resolution of the disturbance without undo injury to patients or staff. The HCT will assist with answering call lights, comfort measures, and provision of fluids/food to patients as needed. The HCT will assist in maintaining tracking information and other duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Rotating Shifts with Compressed Work Schedule availability, and include Nights/Weekends/Holidays. Positions are either primarily Day Shift or primarily Night Shift but tours will be scheduled to meet the needs of the organization.

Physical Requirements: The work requires the Health Technician to be mobile throughout the Inpatient Units and medical center as needed, involving standing, walking, bending, pushing, and lifting (moderately heavy). The Health Technician should be capable of prolonged standing/walking and be physically capable of pushing equipment, wheelchairs and patient stretchers.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: Individual Occupational Requirement: Positions in the occupational series 0640 must have specialized support duty experience to medical or health personnel which required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the Health Technician position.
In Addition to the Basic IOR Requirement above you must also meet the Specialized Experience:
For the GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to: Venipuncture and arterial puncture; Peripheral IV insertion and removal; Patient Care (vital signs, EKGs, glucose testing, bladder scanner, etc.); Patient transport; Lab collection and transportation; Assisting physicians with specialized exams/procedures; Preparing patients for tests/exams; Medical Record documentation and maintenance; Dressing changes and bandage application; Equipment disinfection.

Education
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
