This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position is with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, Operations Division, Physical Support Branch, Plant Section, Yards & Docks Unit. Position serves as working leader on assigned projects with teams of 3 to 8 employees for accomplishing trades and labor work.
Duties
Performs repairs and maintenance of equipment, internal combustion engines, drive trains and mechanical components on a variety of floating, fixed and mobile plant and equipment.
Performs mechanical maintenance, overhaul, and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered heavy construction equipment.
Uses a variety of electronic and computerized diagnostic and testing equipment.
Performs overhaul, repair, and maintenance all types of marine equipment, watercraft, tow boats, and lifeboats.
Adjusts and makes repairs to maintain operation of machines and equipment; determines cause of malfunction or defects and repairs or replaces worn, damaged, or defective parts.
Assigns work to others based on own assessments of individual employee experience, skills, workload, and competence.
Reviews and assigns maintenance work orders, documents completed work including labor and materials, and returns to supervisor.
Requirements

- Must possess and maintain a valid U. S. State Driver's license.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment and annual physical examination to ensure required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

- Incumbent must have a working knowledge of Yamaha engines 75 hp and above. Incumbent must currently possess a valid Yamaha certification or be able to obtain and maintain Yamaha certification within 12 months of employment.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to Lead as a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic. completing both minor and major repairs in accordance with approved work orders; Assigning work to others based on own assessments of individual employee experience, skills, workload, and competence. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Frequent lifting of items weighing 45 pounds and over is required. Lifting devices such as hoist, and slings are available in many of the work areas. Duties require stooping, bending, extended periods of standing on concrete or wooden floors. Incumbent is periodically required to climb ladders to perform wiring on vehicle(s).
WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually performs work inside and outside exposing incumbents to prevailing weather conditions, noise, and intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces. Work is frequently performed in cramped areas of small boats with minimum light and ventilation, and in areas with high temperatures. Incumbents are constantly exposed to moving objects, elevations, and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. Incumbents are also exposed to the possibility of an electric shock when working on wet surfaces and of serious injury from slips and falls. Some propulsion machinery / boilers and main feed pumps are potentially explosive, especially when in a "down" condition. Dirt, grease, dampness, and chemical fumes are frequently encountered. Various protective devices such as safety shoes and glasses, gloves, and hard hats must be used. Observes established safety practices by wearing protective or safety equipment such as ear plugs or muffs, safety shoes, protective eyeglasses, face shield, goggles, gloves, rubber aprons and hard hats.
