The incumbent of this position will serve as a Food Service Worker at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (Las Vegas) with the Nutrition & Food Service. Performing a full range of food preparation, serving, and cleaning work. Position requires knowledge of basic food and equipment handling techniques to include tray assembly, tray delivery and pickup, ware washing and sanitation.

Duties

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Delivers meal trays, tube feedings and nourishment to the patient's bedside, wards, clinics, dining room, etc. in accordance with Nutrition and Food Services Standard Operation Procedure for tray delivery and pick-up. Reports to supervisor or dietitian, or nursing, any problems, complaints or comments Assists patients in setting up tray. For example, opening packaged items (milk, juice, salad dressings, etc.), cuts whole meats to bite sized pieces, etc. Picks up and returns soiled trays and dishes to the dish room after meals. Brews coffee according to the number of servings required. Apportions other food items (e.g., gelatin, juice, desserts, etc.) into standard serving sizes using proper utensils and storage containers. Makes cold sandwiches using prepared ingredients and packs box/sack lunches. Assembles salad type items (fruit or greens) and prepared dressings. Sets up and operates a mechanical dishwasher, including the continuous conveyor belt feeding dishwasher. Removes and inspects doors, strainer pans, screens, and spray arms for preventive maintenance and cleaning. Sets up and operates pot washing. Scrapes, soaks, scours, and scrubs the heavier cooking utensils such as mixing bowls and pots, which because of their large size and weight, may be awkward to handle. Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas, such as cleaning ceilings; cleaning outside of exhaust hoods; cleaning spaces under and behind kitchen equipment, including moving the equipment; washing floors and walls with powered cleaning equipment; cleaning walk in refrigerators and freezers; and sanitizing garbage rooms. Unloads food from delivery trucks, when assigned. Complies with all safety/fire prevention rules/regulations, using protective equipment when required and provided. Promptly reports all accidents and notifies supervisor of unsafe/unhealthful conditions in the workplace. Attends scheduled training sessions and participates in facility or service level safety promotions as directed by supervisor. Physical Requirements: The incumbent performs work requiring light to moderate physical effort and is subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 pounds. The incumbent performs heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in uploading, storing and delivering supplies. May be required to work on ladders and use power-cleaning equipment. Working Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortable high temperatures, humidity and noise. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors from food or beverages and from floors recently mopped. Incumbent is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
