This National Guard position is for a TITLE 5 MAINTENANCE MECHANIC (MI 127 WING), Position Description Number T5799300 and is part of the MI 127 Wing, National Guard.
Duties

This is a Temporary Indefinite vacancy for an appointment of 4 year. The hiring agency has the option to extend this appointment up to a maximum total of 4 years. In the event a permanent employee is accepted for this indefinite position, there will be a change in his/her tenure from permanent to indefinite.
The organizational location of this position is: 127 Wing, Civil Engineering Branch, HVAC Section, Selfridge ANGB, MI. The purpose of this position is: to repair and modify large complex systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating. Maintains, repairs, and modify large/complex heating boilers, and single and multiple fuel power boilers and support equipment including mechanical system controls distribution lines. The position also performs removal and disposes of asbestos and reinsulates buildings, structures and utility systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Repairs and maintains a variety of large commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and supporting
equipment with complex problems and extensive repairs requiring judgment to locate malfunctions. Systems include those with a
variety of compressors and a variety of refrigerant controls. Systems use a variety of complicated motor controls and other controls
to protect against overload or overheating. Calculates air flow and pressure/temperature characteristics.
2. Troubleshoots a variety of large commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and supporting equipment.
Checks elements which control low and high side pressure, the temperature of the cooling units, liquid and suction lines, and the
running line of various mechanisms. Checks for the probability of leaks by visual and audible examination of equipment by application of prescribed test procedures and equipment, and by exploration of probable reasons for equipment failure.
3. Troubleshoots heating boilers, heating systems, and fuel power boilers with complex problems and extensive repairs requiring
judgment to locate malfunctions. Uses specialized test equipment to troubleshoot single and multiple fuel power boilers and
associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment, such as water treatment systems, chemical dispensers, electrostatic,
precipitators, bag houses and ash removal equipment, and wet particulate scrubbers.
4. Performs preventive maintenance on heating boilers and/or fuel power boiler systems and auxiliary equipment. Inspects and
calibrates controls and gauges. Inspects equipment for condition and proper operation. Lubricates components. Examines for wear
and tear and replaces worn out parts, bushings, linkage pins, and unserviceable system units and components.
5. Installs a variety of insulating materials such as fiberglass, magnesia, unibestos, and unicellular foam on surfaces which have
common flat, square, or cylindrical shapes; regular curves; and involve predominantly straight runs. Measures, cuts, trims, fits, and
trowels a variety of prefabricated insulating blocks, pads, sheets, and molded forms.
6. Uses, maintains and accounts for all types of hand and/or power tools as required, to accomplish assigned duties Utilizes safety
practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Minimum Time - 18 Months
Experience or training in more than one trade in the maintenance and repair of facilities and grounds. Experience in selecting routine procedures and materials common to the occupation. Experience in using measuring equipment and various portable power tools. Experience or training in complex trade practices in the maintenance and repair of facilities and grounds. Experience which requires selecting type and amount of materials needed to maintain and repair facilities. Experience using measuring equipment and various portable power tools in work which required close tolerances. Experience or training in performing visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for, and the performance of, repair work
