You will serve as a SUPERVISORY INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE PROGRAM OFFICE (IHOP) of NMRTC SAN DIEGO CA.
This announcement uses the Expansion of Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
Duties
You will supervise individuals in the department in accomplishing the mission of the Industrial Hygiene department and the command.
You will represent Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command San Diego's interest in policy matters at interagency meetings and task groups.
You will utilize regulations, laws, agency directives, and acceptable exposures and control procedures required to interpret legal requirements and serve as an expert witness in court cases.
You will supervise and provide support to industrial work situations involving multifaceted and hazardous industrial operations.
You will communicate strategic plans and missions so values are integrated into team goals and objectives.
You will formulate industrial hygiene control procedures to manage occupational health hazards within the workplace.
You will prepare reports, official correspondence, memorandums, or information papers related to industrial hygiene.
Requirements

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Giving advice and assistance w/regard to experimental operations where protection of workers form hazards must be weighed against the developmental need for new products or processes;
Delivering advice and technical services on industrial hygiene/toxicology matters, (i.e., supervision subordinate personnel; rendering technical advice/direction on industrial hygiene sampling and analysis techniques; to secure information at the workplace to be used in special studies; to gain compliance w/health standards and regulations; to give lectures on occupational health and the application of regulations and standards; to discuss field survey findings, technical issues, and control recommendations; and to resolve technical disagreements);
Providing advice and direction for a broad range of industrial hygiene matters and difficult types of industrial hygiene evaluations;
Applying new techniques, technical advances and experienced judgment in solving problems;
Training industrial hygienists, occupational safety and health personnel, management, supervisors, and employees; AND
Utilizing fiscal policies, material management, inventory control, budget execution, and general supply maintenance procedures.

Education
Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; OR
- A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; OR
- Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).
*Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
Evaluation of Education
All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.
