You will serve as a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Industrial Hygiene Program Office (IHPO) of NMRTC SAN DIEGO CA. This announcement uses the Expansion of Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. Salary Range GS-09 $64,722 - $84,135 / GS-11 $78,307 - $101,796

Duties

You will work with engineering, safety and supervisory personnel to devise control measures such as change in work procedures, ventilation systems, material substitution, or the use of personal protective devices. You will recognize and evaluate occupational health hazards. You will perform unscheduled evaluations and accompanies special inspection teams. You will review facility plans for new construction, renovation and modification of existing structures for appropriate engineering controls to control hazardous materials, noise and physical hazards. You will conduct and document Similar Exposure Groups exposure assessments in the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System- Industrial Hygiene (DOEHRS-IH) database. You will provide on-the-job technical guidance to on-site junior industrial hygienists and industrial hygiene technicians in carrying out inspections, surveys and samplings.

Qualifications

GS-09: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Utilizing industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices applicable to the performance of relatively routine industrial hygiene inspections, or to portions of large and complex inspections; Identify and evaluating occupational health hazards found in industrial operations where processes are still relatively simple and literature on the hazards is, in most cases, readily available; to assist in more complex inspections; Using approaches to the control of harmful exposures; AND Providing written reports with minimal oversight by a senior Industrial Hygienist. GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Basic Requirements
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; (Your transcripts must be attached.)   • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; . Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

Evaluation of Education

All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.
