This Intermediate Care Technician position serves as an advanced technician for the Emergency Department (ED) for patients who are present for treatment.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include: Performs ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department (ED). Performs observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel. Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an emergency setting, which can include assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention, assisting with the management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients by providing one-to-one observations and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB). Assists ED licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations, which may include setting up equipment and passing instruments in the event of: cardioversions, insertion of thoracostomy tubes, or initiation of mechanical ventilation to restore normal physiological function or prevent deterioration of patient's condition. Initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS) and use of automatic external defibrillator (AED). Assists with airway management using bag-valve-mask (BVM), oral airway, or nasal airway. Operates specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus. Observes patient status and keeps licensed personnel informed of any change in condition. Provides support, relief, and coverage as needed to central station telemetry. May be asked to respond to medical emergencies on facility grounds. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: The work schedule will be determined based on the needs of the Medical Center. VA Providence Healthcare System is an acute care facility operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week. While most tours of duty are scheduled during the day, the possibility of working evenings, nights and weekends does exist. Shift changes will be considered based on patient and facility needs. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. You may qualify at the GS-07 level if you fulfill one of the following qualifications: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. You MUST possess at least one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of Intermediate Care Technician position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal Service. Qualifying specialized experience includes: recognizing life threatening situations and acting to correct these emergent situations according to established national or local protocols; understanding the legal/ethical considerations of critical care (e.g., actual/implied consent, patient rights, advanced directives, etc.); taking and recording diagnostic signs to perform patient evaluations and screenings; assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations; and assisting licensed personnel with complex, specialized, and potentially-life threatening situations (experience must be fully documented in your resume). - OR - SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: successfully completed one (1) year of graduate education or internship directly related to the position at the next lower grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) - OR - COMBINATION: of directly related graduate level education and specialized experience (as described above) to meet the requirements at the GS-6 level. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English to meet the requirements of this position. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Clinical Data Collection/DocumentationEmergency CarePatient Care IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires a level of physical fitness that allows for standing for extended periods, heavy lifting to position patients, and manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures. The work will require recurrent bending, lifting, stooping, standing, squatting, stretching, sitting, and walking.
