The Assistant Chief Reusable Medical Devices (AC/RMDC) contributes to the oversight of all supervision, administrative management, and direction of SPS.

Duties

The AC/RMDC contributes to the oversight of all supervision, administrative management, and direction of SPS. The AC/RMDC is required to maintain Level II certification and maintain the minimum of 12 hours of educational hours annually. The AC/RMDC is required to have knowledge of sterilization parameters, biological monitoring, preparation, and packaging, and assists in implementation and maintaining of National Program Office for Sterile Processing (OSP) Directive 1116 guidelines, updating processes based on new manufacture guidelines, current and future directives. Assistant Chief is highly encouraged to be certified and maintain that certification as a Certified Registered Medical Supply Technician. The AC/RMDC assists the SPS Chief in oversight and planning, direction, and management of all areas of SPS to include Decontamination, Sterile Preparation, and Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) reprocessing. The AC/RMDC provides administrative duties to include, conducting quality assurance audits, maintaining sterilization records, completing dashboard data, providing educational in-services, completing Suspenses, completing action plans, assisting with budget preparation and management, preparing procurement packages and contracts, and serving as a resource to other Medical Supply Technicians. Keeps statistics and records as assigned by the Chief of SPS and provides reports at regular intervals. As part of this work, AC/RMDC will recognize significant trends and make recommendations regarding them, including implementing course correction as needed. The AC/RMDC assists the Chief in overseeing subordinates within SPS. Assists in training and coaching employees through demonstration, oral and written instructions. Responsible for training, documenting and evaluation of staff abilities and competencies. Recommends staff selection, assigns staff work, and provides direction to subordinate staff. AC/RMDC prepares reports on activities of the department and maintains required records of personnel e.g. competencies, functional statements, in-service documentation, etc. The AC/RMDC provides oversight in the development, implementation, coordination, maintenance, and evaluation of critical and semi-critical medical devices with the RMD program. Reviews the acquisition of new equipment and advises using services of anticipated delivery dates. Controls the release of any new equipment until verification of SOPs have been developed and communicated to staff. This includes coordination across services and/or disciplines which can influence the organizational mission, vision, values and strategic priorities for RMD. Monitors, analyzes, and provides consultation on infection control issues regarding RMD. Participates in clinical rounds to assist in the verification of each service's SOPs for RMD. Investigates the need for any manufacturer and model-specific SOP required for new RMD at the time of the acquisition request. When new SOPs are required, obtains the necessary information from the manufacturer or vendor. Develops SOPs to standardize equipment used in the medical center. Educates hospital staff, including the executive level, on all new equipment to ensure compliance is met as it relates to RMD. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Knowledge of universal precautions and infection prevention Basic knowledge of medical terminology Basic knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment Level 1 and level 2 Sterile Processing certification or other equivalent Knowledge of Censitrac or other instrument data tracking system Experience in a leadership or management role. Experience with writing and updating standard operating procedures/policies Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the health care system. The AC/RMDC may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lighted. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation.
