Employee will serve as a Health Technician aligned within Patient Care Services located at the Veterans Healthcare System in Ann Arbor, MI.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: Supports nurses and physicians by performing non-invasive Electrocardiograms and Bladder Scans using diagnostic and therapeutic medical instruments and equipment. Applies basic orthopedic splints and performs dressing changes. Performs phlebotomy and point-of-care testing using glucometer and I-Stat devices and CLIA waived testing. Documents treatment, procedures, or telemetry identification in the electronic medical record. Prepares and sets-up equipment, etc. for procedure to be performed by licensed providers. Assists nursing staff and physicians in the care and treatment of the critically ill and with emergent needs. Observes and reports changes in patient behavior, attitude, bodily complaints, appearance, vitals, and other patient symptoms. Identified life-threatening situations and activates appropriate codes or steps required for definitive help. Provides non-professional nursing care and intervention to patients experiencing extremes of behavior, such as suicide. Observes patient for high-risks and follow procedures to ensure safety of room environment, maintaining line-of-sight visual surveillance, and reports changes in patient behavior. Performs simple patient care duties: bathing, oral, nail, hair care; assists with meals; assists with toileting needs; active/passive range-of-motion activities; etc. Performs administrative tasks and manages various support functions for clinic/practice, includes: maintains control records for specimens and tests and documents measurements taken. Works with logistics and nursing personnel to establish par levels of supplies and ensure supplies are readily available for patient care. Monitors and plans equipment inventory and equipment maintenance needed. Orders equipment, supplies, and instruments for the clinic/unit. The care provided frequently involves setting up, operating, maintaining, and calibrating various types of medical equipment, including telemetry and pulse oximetry monitors, surgical wound suctions equipment, traction, electrocardiogram machines, bladder scanners, per manufacturers recommendations. Performs other duties as necessary. Work Schedule: Full-Time position(s), 40-hour pay period includes 12-hour shifts and 8-hour shift between 7:30am - 8:00pm, with alternating weekends and holidays. Part-Time positions(s), 20-hour per pay period includes 12-hour shifts and 8-hour shift between 7:30am - 8:00pm, with alternating weekends and holidays. NOTE: The part-time position (20 hours/week) salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal service. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes Cardiac monitoring using telemetry equipment such as EKG, cardiac monitors, pulse oximetry, and other diagnostic equipment; monitoring patient vital signs; recognizing, responding, and reporting signs and changes in cardiac rhythms; setting up and calibrating various patient care equipment; and applying skill using computers and basic office equipment to perform data entry and administrative duties. (Resume must clearly support responses to the online questionnaire to receive credit.) -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed Six months of Graduate education, or an internship meets the specialized experience required, only if directly related to the position to be filled. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education, combined with specialized experience is qualifying. Education and experience must be directly related to the position to be filled. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: ClericalDecisivenessInterpersonal SkillsTechnical Competence IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Provides non-professional nursing care to patients experiencing extremes of behavior on a regular and recurring basis. Responds to emergency mental health situations, where danger of physical attack by patients requires special training. When patients express or exhibit suicidal ideation, the employee intervenes by utilizing techniques per established procedure to keep the patient safe, and maintain person safety, while awaiting assistance. The employee must be able to lift 35 pounds, and perform the following: pulling, pushing, reaching above the shoulders and laterally, use of fingers, both hands, arms, and legs, sitting, walking, and standing for long periods. Must be able to hear whispered voice (with or without hearing aid), kneeling, repeated bending, ability for rapid mental/muscular coordination simultaneously, visual requirements for monitoring, observation, depth perception, and ability to distinguish shads of color due to equipment wiring.
