The Health Technician position is located at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System, Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) department.

Duties

The Health Technician (PM&R) performs the following major duties: Support three separate programs in coordination with PMRS health care professionals including but not limited to: acute care physical and occupational therapy, Comprehensive Intensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Program (CIIRP), and STRIDE Program (supervised walking program). May involve guarding the patient, pushing or positioning the wheelchair behind the patient or as directed by the therapist, assisting with trunk support in unsupported sitting, assistance with maximal assist to dependent transfers, donning and doffing gait belt, donning/doffing braces (such as TLSO, cervical collar, prosthesis, AFO, etc.) and being on standby for safety concerns that may arise. The Health Technician will assist with STRIDE, a supervised walking program for hospitalized veterans. Assists the therapists with treatments - makes gross visual observations, takes vitals and identifies subtle changes regarding the patient's condition. Monitors patients for adverse reactions and takes corrective action based on established policy and past experience. Recognizes abnormalities and brings them to the attention of appropriate health care professionals. Answers the phone, providing non-clinical information; refers callers to appropriate staff; records telephone messages for delivery to PM&R physicians and therapists. Performs all other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)/PD142070 Physical Requirements: The work is primarily active and requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of light items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity and may require heavy lifting of equipment or patients.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: acknowledging, receiving, and carrying out requests or instructions for procedures, equipment set-up, patient assistance or patient care primarily from staff in the PT, OT and Physiatrist sections. Management of multiple lines including IV pole, pulse oximeter, oxygen tank, etc. as directed by the PT, PTA, OT, COTA or other PMRS clinical staff. Coordinate daily walks with nursing staff, obtaining vital signs pre and post walk as needed, supervising the walks for safety, reviewing activity goals, and providing motivation as well as encouragement to the veteran. Locate and set up equipment and all accessories and understands proper positioning; adjusts equipment placement for patients' comfort; coordinating procedure schedules, collaborating with other services as needed. Receives and directs patients; receives and responds to routine inquiries from patients concerning a variety of medical, personnel, and administrative matters and makes referrals; assists patients in contacting volunteer or social services as needed. Assists patients, visitors, patient family members and others requesting information, guidance or referral for special assistance; assists patients to the wards, clinics, or outside to cars with equipment, as needed. OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level. OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-06 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-06. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
