The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Program is a program designed to hire transitioning service, National Guard, Reserve, and Veteran corpsmen, combat medics and medical technicians into positions at VA Medical Centers as an integral part of the medical team. Candidates generally qualify based on U.S. Armed Forces experience or equivalent education.

Duties

As an ICT, you will operate within clearly defined clinical competencies. For the purposes of this national job announcement, you may work in multiple clinical settings based on facility needs, these include but are not limited to, Emergency Medicine. The clinical activities for the hospital will include but are not limited to: Performing observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel, this may involve obtaining patient health history for chief complaints, medication history, and information about health-related or high-risk conditions that may impact the patient's health status. Completing approved templates and tools, example: MiniCog screening established by the agency. Assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an emergency setting. This can include assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention, assists with the management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, by providing one-to-one observations and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB). Assists Emergency Department (ED) licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations. You will assist licensed staff with setting up equipment and passing instruments. Operating specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus in accordance with applicable training and standards. Observes patient status and keeps licensed personnel informed of any change in condition. Assists licensed staff with response to medical emergencies on the facility grounds, and sometimes encounters may be life threatening as part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blue, or medical transport team. Performing vital signs, 12-lead electrocardiogram (EKG). Performing Point-of-care (POC), examples: Abbott hand-held blood analyzer (I-STAT), glucometer. Specimen collection and Preparation, example: collecting and labeling venous blood samples. Observations and interventions, examples: oxygen therapy and splinting. Medication Administration, methods may include intramuscular, oral, topical, eye drops, ear drops, intranasal, rectal suppositories, local anesthetics, nebulized medications, subcutaneous, and intradermal. Wound Care, examples: bandaging application of dressings and wound measurements. Assisting with patient exams and screenings. Electronic Health Record (EHR): Thoroughly and continually documents actions, interventions, and patient response in health record. Work Schedule: Full-Time. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/05/2025. Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): The Health Aid and Technician Series, 0640, has a minimum qualification entry requirement. Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience (GS-07): One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service). Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: Under supervision of licensed personnel, performs patient care duties, such as: Administering medication; Providing geriatric-specific care; Observing patient status and keeping licensed personnel informed of any change in condition; Performing cardiovascular monitoring; Collecting specimens; Assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an emergency setting; Setting up equipment and surgical instrumentation; Performing Vital Signs and Point of Care Testing; Responding to medical emergencies as part of a rapid response team. OR Education (GS-07): One full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) meets the requirements for GS-7 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position (Transcripts Required) OR Combination (GS-07): Combination of specialized experience and graduate education (transcripts required) English Language Proficiency: Individuals serving in direct patient care positions must be proficient in [both] spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
