This position is responsible for operating a transportation system between various VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS) facilities; VA/DoD medical centers, other medical centers, and private residences. This job consists of driving various vehicles while transporting patients, employees, cargo, and mail to the different destinations. Position aligns under Supply Chain Management.
Duties
Major duties include:
Drives, maintains, and cares for all types of Government owned vehicles such as passenger cars, patient transport vehicles, wheelchair vans, and trucks up to and including one- and one-half tons.
Responsible for transporting patients, employees, lab specimens, and materials safely' between various destinations.
Completes vehicle daily maintenance checks, including fuel, oil, water, automatic transmissions, instruments, horn, brakes, and any leaks.
Ensures that all required accident forms, bridge tickets, and manuals are maintained in the vehicle
Must be able to read and interpret road maps to determine the shortest and quickest route to and from a destination.
Properly loads and unload vehicles so as not to injure patients or damage cargo.
Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 5:30am - 4:00 pm

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires long periods of driving, lifting and normal dexterity. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of patients. Incumbent must be able to help non-ambulatory patients from vehicIes, wheelchairs or gurneys. Such lifting may require considerable physical exertion, since some patients are, debilitated or paralyzed. Patients must be moved correctly while using proper body mechanics toprevent injury. Moderate physical effort is required in handling objects weighing up to 30 pounds and occasional handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. The incumbent is required to work outside and is occasionally exposed to inclement weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles. Drives in all types of traffic, weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. The operator is subject to cuts, bruises, and broken belies as a result of accidents while driving or when leading or unloading vehicles,
