About the Position: Serves as a Public Safety Dispatcher in the Directorate of Emergency Services, Police/Provost Marshall Division, Communications Branch on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. This is a developmental position. This position can be filled at the GS-05, GS-06 or GS-07 grade level with career ladder promotion to the GS-07 grade level.

Duties

Responsible for the receipt and effective evaluation of 911 emergency calls. Identify the determinant and level of response and provides this and any additional information to the responding units. Transfer caller to proper agency as determined or dispatches a variety of emergency equipment to include police, fire, ambulance, rescue or hazardous materials units. Provide emergency medical dispatching (EMD) assistance to callers with medical emergencies using the local authority's emergency medical dispatch system. Update information for medical, police and fire personnel enroute to call. Provide assistance to medical, police and fire personnel by acting as liaison between department personnel and other agencies.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the employee to successfully pass a Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) investigation, which includes a Criminal Justice Fingerprint background screening.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Employee must possess or obtain a valid State driver's license in one of the 50 U.S states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program. Pre-employment and random drug testing is required.
  • Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays), on a rotating schedule.
  • This position requires employee to possess, or obtain and maintain certification in DoD Hazardous Materials Awareness.
  • This position requires employee to possess, or obtain and maintain certification in Advanced Medical Priority Dispatch System training.
  • Employee must maintain an overall compliance score of 90 percent, or better, as reviewed by the Advanced Quality Assurance (AQUA) software.
  • This position requires employee to possess, or obtain and maintain certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
  • This position requires attaining Continuing Dispatch Education (CDE) requirements through in-service training that is offered locally.
  • This position requires the employee to possess, or obtain and maintain Department of Defense Tele-communicator I/II Certification.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. GS-05: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes operating emergency dispatching or communications equipment to assist with dispatching public service assistance (i.e., police, fire or medical services). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. GS-06:Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with answering/assessing 911 emergency calls to determine appropriate course of action; and 2) operating telecommunications equipment such as computer aided dispatch systems, 911 emergency telephone equipment and radio systems to dispatch public service assistance (i.e., police, fire or medical services); and 3) operating office automation software to input, retrieve, or maintain data pertinent to emergency dispatch operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-05). GS-07:Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with answering/assessing 911 emergency calls to determine appropriate course of action; 2) assisting with providing pre-arrival instructions to 911 callers until appropriate emergency units arrive on scene; and 3) using telecommunications equipment such as computer aided dispatch systems, 911 emergency telephone equipment and radio systems to communicate information and/or dispatch public service assistance (i.e., police, fire or medical services). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
