This position is located in the Construction Section of Engineering Service at VA Oklahoma City Health Care System - Oklahoma City VA Medical Center in Oklahoma City, OK. The Maintenance Mechanic performs the duties of a fully trained construction specialist.
Duties
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing various tasks from written and oral instructions; reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, and drawings; and performing material takeoffs for ordering various sizes of projects. Other duties include floor preparation and installation of flooring materials such as ceramic tile, sheetrock walls and ceilings, metal studs, structural studs and wall backing sets steel frames, steel and wood doors and windows. The Maintenance Mechanic also installs door hardware such as closures, slides and glides, hinges, lock sets, kick plates, push and pulls, etc.; cabinetry, handrails, bumper rails, corner guards, overhead doors, curtain track, accordion doors and rails; and lathing channel, metal lath, corner boards, floor boards and masonry repairs and installation. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Concrete: Determining the layout, measurements, materials, and tools required to construct concrete structures (walls, slabs, footers, forms, etc.) at a journeyman level
Metal Work: Assembling, constructing, reconstructing, and repairing metal furniture, shelving and other items pertaining to metal work as well as welding on carbon steel pipes (Arc and MIG) and fabrication of various items
Flooring/Roofing/Misc. Hardware: Performing preventive maintenance and repairs, installing or replacing building service hardware, floor coverings, vinyl and ceramic tile (wall and floor), roofs, windows, doors and frames, Formica and molding, ceiling tile, suspended ceilings, metal studs, etc. on existing buildings and structures
Drywall: Installing and repairing dry wall and using various spray machines; determining the methods, techniques, devices and materials for surface finishes to be prepared or repaired; preparing surfaces and coating materials; and applying coating material with any of the accepted trade devices
Painting: Performing interior and exterior painting; mixing paint and matching colors as well as type of paint to use for specific applications; and setting up scaffolds, ladders, remove old paint, fill cracks, and apply new maintenance coatings
Plumbing: Modifying, repairing, troubleshooting, utility, supply and disposal systems, including equipment such as water closets, tubs, showers, fire sprinkler systems, and any other equipment involved in sewage, gas, water and oil distribution systems
Electrical: Applying a working knowledge of electricity and electrical distribution systems which will allow him to perform basic electrical repair
Material Acquisition: Responsible for requisition of materials, tools and equipment as necessary to perform assigned duties and for planning the materials, tools, and techniques needed and for completing the work
Misc: Providing assistance when required by the other trades and/or perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 03:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires strenuous exertion in building, removing or replacing walls, floors; requires standing for long periods of time, working in heated or cold areas. Incumbent must work on ladders, scaffolds, and roofs while sitting, kneeling, standing or stooping in an awkward position. Must handle heavy tools i.e. drills at arm's length and overhead from time to time). Must unload from trucks and place on storage racks such heavy and bulky materials as plywood, wallboard, hardboard, and other types of lumber and materials. Incumbent must work throughout all areas of the Medical Center. In some cases, he must go in out-of-the-way areas such as boiler/mechanical rooms, pipe chases, roofs, attics, basement, etc., which may require kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, etc. Frequently handles objects weighing 10 to 90 pounds. Project demands may require work at other than normal administrative hours.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Some work is performed in the shop areas. Incumbent is required to work in close, tight areas at times. Incumbent is exposed to hazards of working from heights, falling materials, steam and hot water lines, sometimes exposed to electrical shocks. Incumbent is subject to working out in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures and in confined dusty and dirty areas. Work is usually done in well lighted, heated and ventilated areas. Outdoor work is normally done in good weather. Incumbent may occasionally work in dirty, dusty, hot or cold environments such as crawl spaces and attics. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, broken bones, and serious burns caused by electrical shock, high voltage, and hot components while working around equipment. At times, works around extremely high noise and vibration sources. Work in ward areas around sick patients. Incumbent may be called upon to work overtime and call-back in case of emergencies.
