Serves as Maintenance Worker responsible for general maintenance and mechanical repair requirements as established by the Grounds Shop Foreman of the Maintenance and Operations Section of the Engineering Service at the New Mexico VA Health Care System.

Duties

Operates electric, gasoline, or diesel powered fork lift trucks which are capable of lifting loads weighing 4,500 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or more that are higher than 420 centimeters (168 inches). Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controllers, equipment, electric valves and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings. Repairs and maintains food carts, laundry carts, metal furniture, pumps and air compressors throughout the medical center. Removes damaged portions of walls, partitions, or other similar structures in preparation for repair of damage. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and failures and determines the extent of repairs and parts needed, estimated materials required, selects best work methods, techniques and trade practices and accomplishes the repair or overhaul. Follows general instructions or simple drawings to perform tasks that require significant manual skill, prior work experience or training, and very heavy physical effort. Maintains the integrity and accuracy of data related to accomplished work in a work management system. Identifying malfunctions or non-functions, then proceeding with corrective action as necessary. Repairing tools, safety equipment, and portable power equipment such a pipe wrenches, pneumatic hammers, portable pumps, hand held electric power tools chisels, picks, axes, shovels, mowing equipment, Irrigation equipment etc. Determines the type and gauge of wire, raceway fittings, hangers, protective devices, controls, etc., by referring to engineering drawings, equipment manuals, and name plate data. Operates a variety of hand and power tools such as hammers, hand saws, drills, planes, routers, screwdrivers, power nailers, fasteners glue guns, metal shears, screw guns, power saws power sanders and grinders, cleaning, organizing tools for use as needed. Constructs, alters, maintains, and repairs buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials. Determines the manner and sequence of loading cargo to achieve load balance and adequate protection for fragile items. Operates large, complex riding mowers and/or specially designed riding mowers that operate on slopes. NOTE: The incumbent shall wear personal protective equipment as required by the particular situation and is subject to emergency call back at all hours. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 3:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/ 50241A Physical Requirements: Works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic platforms. He/she often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty, and hard-to-reach locations. The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. Occasionally require to lift and carry items over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Exposed to a full array of weather conditions. Subject to danger of falling when working from ladders or hydraulic lifts. Exposed to dust/dirt while mixing mortar and handling materials. Work is performed in all areas of the hospital environment, inside and outside. Work is often dirty, dusty, and greasy. The incumbent is subjected to such hazardous conditions as injury from power driven tools, falling from scaffolds and ladders, temperatures extremes, noise, and bad weather conditions. He/She is frequently exposed to the possibilities of cuts, bruises, scratches, broken bones, and burns. He/She is subject to asbestos exposure and chemicals which can cause burns or irritation to the skin. Some duties may require incumbent to wear protective equipment and clothing that is heavy and uncomfortable.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
