The incumbent works under the supervision of the Chief, Voluntary Service. Receives assignments that require application of standard procedures or that require special procedures that are identified and explained. The incumbent will work at the front "Greeter's" desk and other areas of the hospital assisting the Chief, Voluntary Service in ensuring that the Erie Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is able to provide excellent customer service to our Veteran patients.

Duties

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm or 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. Position Description Title/PD#: Voluntary Service Assistant/PD000139 Major Duties Include but not limited to: Responds to questions from patients concerning various Erie VAMC services. Pushing wheelchairs, gurneys, and assist with transporting medical equipment. Assists Veteran patients with checking in for appointments at the Kiosks. Researches problems and/or reviews issues and requests related to information regarding services in the Medical Center, clarifies issues, and evaluates the need for additional information. Understands and carries out the requests made by the Chief, Voluntary Service, Service-Level Patient Advocates, or seeks assistance for uncommon, unique, or new tasks. Assists with meeting the needs of customers while supporting the Erie VAMC mission. Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff/volunteers) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately. Provides administrative functions for Voluntary Service utilizing the Voluntary Service System (VSS) computer system. Provides administrative functions for the facility complying with ADP security requirements, handling written correspondence and telephone inquiries, and training. Performs general administrative support related to the staff, volunteers and patients. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily physical which requires standing, walking, bending, lifting and pushing wheelchairs, gurneys and other medical equipment. The work requires average agility and dexterity. The work requires some occasional lifting. Work Environment: The work environment is throughout the Erie VAMC and involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices and meeting/training rooms. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/30/2023. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-04 grade level: Generalized Experience: You must have one year of experience in progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. OR, Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-04 level. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Do you possess two (2) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite? This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Do you possess a combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience to meet the total experience requirements. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. (i.e. 6 months of general experience and 1 year of education above the high school level). You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Computer SkillsDecision MakingOrganizational StewardshipVeteran and Customer Focus Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
