Duties

Conduct research addressing the ecology, conservation and management of migratory birds on Department of Defense military and civil works lands and waters. Design and implement visual and acoustic inventory and monitor studies of birds, in a variety of habitats (e.g., forests, deserts, grasslands) throughout the country. Familiar with recovery planning and implementation for federally threatened and endangered species. Develop, apply, and implement technological approaches (i.e. acoustics, imagery, satellite tracking, motus) for improving bird conservation efforts. Develop and write grants and proposals. Market personal and team capabilities to potential sponsors for new work. Assemble and lead a multi-disciplinary team to solve complex natural resources problems. Document findings through presentations, reports and journal articles. Conduct fieldwork in a variety of environments, including those with temperature extremes and difficult terrain.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Education for Wildlife Biologist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) with a major in wildlife biology, zoology, or botany that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in biological science and 15 semester hours in the physical, mathematical, and earth sciences. This course work must have included at least 9 semester hours of training applicable to wildlife biology in such subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, principles of population dynamics, or related course work in the field of wildlife biology; AND at least 12 semester hours in zoological subjects such as invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates, embryology, animal physiology, entomology, herpetology, parasitology, and genetics; AND at least 9 semester hours in the field of botany and related plant science; AND at least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, soils, and/or geology. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience with quantitative tools, GIS, and programming languages (R, Python, etc.).; experience with technology and automated analyses of acoustic data and camera imagery; and experience with military and/or civil projects, lands, or personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service DB-02(GS-11). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: wildlife biology, zoology, or botany. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
