Duties

Design and implement visual and acoustic inventory and monitoring studies of birds, in a variety of habitats (e.g., forests, deserts, grasslands) throughout the country. Practice recovery planning and implementation for federally threatened and endangered species. Develop application and implementation of technological approaches (i.e., acoustics, imagery, satellite tracking, motus) for improving bird conservation efforts. Demonstrates experimental design and analyses of complex data sets. Develops and writes successful grants and proposals, and successfully marketing personal and team capabilities to potential sponsors for new work. Assembles multi-disciplinary teams to solve complex natural resources problems. Establishes written and verbal communication skills to document findings through presentations, reports, and journal articles. Completes fieldwork in a variety of environments, including those with temperature extremes and difficult terrain. Uses quantitative tools, GIS, and programming languages (R, Python, etc.). Completes work using technology and automated analyses of acoustic data and camera imagery. Collaborates with military and/or civil projects, lands, or personnel.

Basic Requirement for Research Wildlife Biologist: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) with a major in wildlife biology, zoology, or botany that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in biological science and 15 semester hours in the physical, mathematical, and earth sciences. This course work must have included at least 9 semester hours of training applicable to wildlife biology in such subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, principles of population dynamics, or related course work in the field of wildlife biology; AND at least 12 semester hours in zoological subjects such as invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates, embryology, animal physiology, entomology, herpetology, parasitology, and genetics; AND at least 9 semester hours in the field of botany and related plant science; AND at least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, soils, and/or geology. For the DB-4 Level in addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience with quantitative tools, GIS, and programming languages (R, Python, etc.).; experience with technology and automated analyses of acoustic data and camera imagery; and experience with military and/or civil projects, lands, or personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service DB-02(GS-11). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: wildlife biology, zoology, or botany. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: LeadershipOral CommunicationPlanning and EvaluatingTechnology ApplicationWildlife Biology Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent DB-4 (GS-11). This announcement MAY be used to fill like vacancies six months from the closing date. All qualification requirements, including time after competitive appointment, must be met by the closing date of this announcement. This position is covered by the Science and Technology Laboratory Personnel Management Demonstration Project at the DB-04 (equivalent to GS-12 to GS-14) level. In accordance with the Federal Register Vol.63, No. 57, dated March 25, 1998, and employee of the Laboratory Demonstration project must have a current average performance score of 2.5 or above in order to be selected for promotion. All applicants currently employed under a Laboratory Demonstration Project must include their most recent performance appraisal score as part of their electronic resume.
