The Float Health Technician within the PCS Surgery Specialty Clinics at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana and associated CBOCs provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions. PCS Surgery Specialty clinics include General Surgery, Peripheral Vascular, Wound, Plastics, ENT, GYN, Ortho, Urology, Podiatry, and Neurosurgery.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Performs a range of diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording and reporting to appropriate provider any deviations in vital signs, pulse oximetry, weight, taking specimens, labeling specimens for the laboratory. Performing Environment of Care tasks such as area cleaning, organizing and stocking, as well as troubleshooting, and intervening to rectify equipment malfunctions and/or reporting issues requiring intervention or higher level notification/intervention. Explains procedures and positions patients for a variety of difficult procedures. Determining technical factors, setting controls and operating equipment and instruments. Assisting medical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures used to diagnose medical conditions. Orders and maintains supplies for the unit, to include specialized supplies pertaining to instruments used in the unit. Provides clerical and administrative support to the unit. Performs direct patient support work to include collecting information from patients, providing personal patient care and educating patients on pre-testing and post procedure activities. Obtaining blood specimens venous; urinary catheterization; attaching patients to monitors for continuous cardiac, oxygenation, and respiratory monitoring; performing EDKs, orthostatic blood pressures,, applying cold/warm compresses, and wrapping extremities, etc. Performs difficult specialized tests and measurements that are preliminary to the physician's treatment of the patient. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/12/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: For the program specialist GS-06, you must meet one of the following: You may qualify based on your experience: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS05 (developmental) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Supports medical and health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions; Performs technical work in support of diagnostic tests and procedures; supports health and medical staff during diagnosis or treatment of patients; operates and maintains medical instruments and equipment for diagnostic and treatment procedures; and, performs requests or instructions for procedures, equipment set-up, patient assistance or patient care, etc. Preferred Experience: Surgery or procedural experience is preferred. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Attention to DetailClericalCommunicationsComputer SkillsCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily physically active and requires extensive and prolonged standing, walking, bending, lifting, sitting and carrying of items, and involves pushing and pulling of wheelchairs/stretchers/mobile equipment. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work may require heavy lifting of equipment, supplies and/ or patients in conjunction with patient lifting resources as available. The work requires the ability to multitask while performing administrative, clerical and clinical duties.
