This position is located within the Business Office in the Health Administration Service (HAS) at the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System in Sioux Falls, SD. The Telephone Operator responds on an attendant console to a high volume of calls efficiently, courteously and promptly.
Duties

The major duties include but are not limited to:
Places operator assisted calls including overseas calls, makes overhead pages and announcements, provides information services, arranges conference calls and directs visitors to various offices;
Uses and monitors two-way radio equipment, pocket and audio paging system;
Monitors and assists in testing alarm systems and notifies appropriate personnel when alarms are sounded;
Issues pocket pages and maintains accurate records of staff members charged with responsibility for pagers;
Provides basic training in the operation of the paging system upon issuance of pagers;
Maintains a log of unusual situations such as fire alarms, threatening calls and other significant events that occur during a tour;
Maintains electronic desktop station phone book;
Facilitates timely access to appropriate healthcare services to patients, by serving as a liaison for the patient in the areas of pharmacy, scheduling and the provision of healthcare services with the patient's primary care physician, as well as specialty services through telephone contact; and
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position at the GS-4 level, you must meet one of the following:
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of general experience that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Telephone Operator GS-4. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates your ability to perform the duties of this position. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title; duties; month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~
EDUCATION: Two (2) years of education above the high school level for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~
COMBINATION: Equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and general experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. NOTE: Your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required.

Physical Requirements: Work involves long periods of sitting and continual use of a headset. Use of the handset is optional. There are mental demands inherent in dealing with emergency situations in this position, particularly when working along. The person in this position should have a degree of emotional maturity adequate to deal with the stress involved in the position.
