The Telephone Operator provides customer service to incoming and in-house calls for the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Determine proper routing of phone calls.
Knowledge of the organizational structure of the Medical Center.
Handle a variety of difficult calls, requiring personal involvement.
Must place outgoing toll calls charged to the Medical Center, and accurately record time, charges, and other pertinent information.
Must be totally familiar with the contents of the Medical Center's Safety and Fire Regulations, in that the operator's responsibilities include dealing with threatening telephone calls, bomb threats, fire alarms, tornado warnings, or other unexpected emergencies, such as a Code Blue.
Sorts all incoming mail on weekends and holidays for distribution to patients.
Maintains all lost and found items, and makes proper recordings of items received and returned in the log book.
Incumbent must converse with all callers, directing them to the appropriate department and visitors to the appropriate location/or service.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Specialized Experience: To qualify for this position, you must possess one (1) year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Examples of general experience would typically include, but are not limited to: providing customer service to internal and external customers; verbal and written communication; computer; and administrative skills. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two years of education above high school (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED). OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Physical Requirements: The work is usually sedentary, but may involve some standing and walking to consult directories and manuals.
