This position is located at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System (VALBHS) within the Environmental Management Service (EMS) section. The primary purpose of the position is to serve the Veteran under the supervision of the Hospital Housekeeping Officer of EMS, ensuring a safe and sanitary environment of VA facilities for Veterans, their families, and staff which is essential to the patient care experience.

Duties

Major Duties: Incumbent performs a wide variety of minor maintenance work which involves carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical repair work in all buildings of the Medical Center. Performs the ordering and stocking of all cleaning chemicals and supplies, as well as delivery, restocking, and issuing of all EMS supplies daily. Ensures all general, hazardous and recyclable waste is sorted and disposed of properly, including the monitoring and servicing of shred bins and shred bin waste. Performs minor repairs to floor equipment such as vacuums, buffers, burnishers, extractors, scrubbers, housekeeping carts, and other equipment. Tasks may include simple bag and filter changes, charging or replacing batteries, and inspecting all turned in equipment for service ability. Performs all scheduled preventative maintenance on EMS equipment, to include assuring that EMS equipment is well organized and is kept in a neat fashion within assigned rooms. Under general supervision, operates various equipment when needing to accomplish assignments, such as, power tools, hand tools, etc. Performs general maintenance of Environmental Management Service (EMS) support work. Installs and maintains dispensers and hand sanitizer stations, and fixtures. Incumbent must be familiar with utilizing forklift s, trailers, pallet jacks, lift gates, and miscellaneous special purpose vehicles. Maintains and organizes EMS warehouses/ storage areas and participates in accomplishing and coordinating schedule set ups for Medical Center events on and off site. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Varied work schedule, which includes weekends and holidays, details can be discussed at time of interview. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work involves a considerable amount of standing, kneeling, stooping, bending, stretching, walking. Incumbent must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 75 pounds. Assistance is usually available for handling of heavier material and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, walking, climbing, stooping, ability for normal mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, normal hearing and vision. Must have physical capabilities for working inside and outside in excessive heat and cold, noise, confined areas, inclement weather and on intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces. Incumbent must be able to work from ladders and platforms, and work in awkward and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent is under the immediate supervision of the EMS Maintenance Supervisor but will also receive instructions in congruence with related EMS work assignments. Incumbent is responsible for the maintenance, storage and safeguard of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies for his/her area of assignment. At times the incumbent is required to work in areas that are poorly lit and must be able to work both inside and outside in all types of weather. The incumbent works in areas where clothes and skin can be soiled by grease dust and chemicals. Work is required in all areas of the Medical Center, and Community Based Outpatient Clinics to include contagious diseases, and/or contaminated areas. Incumbent will be provided and required to wear universal protection items such as, caps, gowns, mask, full face, or any safety equipment.
