The Perioperative RN is a member of the Surgery Care service line whose role is to provide safe, prompt, and skillful pre procedural, and/or post procedural nursing care for patients requiring an invasive diagnostic or treatment procedure and/or operative or invasive procedures. The acuity of patients is within the range of those appropriate for outpatient ambulatory care having GI procedures or outpatient surgical procedures with or without conscious sedation and/or anesthesia.

Duties

The Perioperative RN is expected to execute position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. S/he demonstrates, Leading and organizing delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning; Using advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes, functioning as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities, systematically evaluating current practice and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise, Guiding, developing, and supporting staff from a leadership perspective, and using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities. Nursing care includes but not limited to: Assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of patients pre- procedurally and post-procedurally Coordination and management of patient care during all phases of the procedure and recovery phase Interpretation of signs, symptoms, and diagnostic monitoring with reporting, documentation, and implementation of ordered interventions during the pre- or post-procedural period Implementation of standards of care and practice for patients undergoing endoscopic or surgery procedures. Care is provided to patients with the goal of achieving quality patient care by improving clinical outcomes, increasing continuity of care, and minimizing health care costs. The minimum qualification for this Candidate includes 2-3 years of professional nursing experience for a nurse with either a master's degree in nursing or a master's degree in a related field with a BSN or a bachelor's degree in a related field with an Associate degree or Diploma or Doctoral degree in nursing or a related health field. The RN is directly responsible to the designated Surgery Assistant Nurse Manager and the Surgery Nurse Manager and functions to provide, direct, and supervise the delivery of quality nursing care to veteran patients. The RN possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting. This broad based clinical knowledge enables the Perioperative RN to effectively implement health promotion and prevention interventions, manage acute and chronic states, assist veterans in the attainment of their optimal levels of health and functioning, and provide supportive measures as indicated for veterans and their significant others. The RN will adhere to all current directives of VHA, and meet current Joint Commission standards, State licensure standards, and VA-OIG expectations. The RN will intentionally create opportunities to leverage virtual care technology to support the mission of the facility and VA at large. Work Schedule: 8:30am to 5:00pm; Monday through Friday. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,11/30/2023. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. [NOTE: See exception in subparagraph (b) below for candidates who are enrolled in a MSN Bridge Program.] The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), previously known as the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) OR The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. In these programs, students are given a certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX and should submit this certification to VA prior to appointment. Students do not earn a BSN, but receive a MSN degree upon completion of course work. A copy of the MSN transcript must be provided to VA. Bridge programs that confer a master's degree also fully meet the education requirement, even though a Bachelor's Degree is not awarded. OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Registration: A registered nurse (RN) will have a current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The appointing official may waive this registration if the RN is to serve in a country other than the U.S. and the RN has registration in that country (e.g., Philippines). The RN must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA. English Language Proficiency: RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR A Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR A BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR A Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR A Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR A Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR A Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. S/he may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. S/he must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
