This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
a.Medication Distribution System:
Reads and interprets prescriptions from the veterans integrated software technology architecture (VistA), ScriptPro, computerized patient record keeping system (CPRS) or in written format.
Reviews prescription orders for technical accuracy.
Prepares medications and ensures the orderable item matches the item being dispensed with regard to drug, strength, quantity or appropriate supply item.
Uses ScriptPro and ScriptTalk to batch and label medications.
Maintains highly sophisticated pharmacy equipment. This includes cleaning procedures and maintenance of ScriptPro, ancillary ScriptPro fill stations, ScriptTalk, and Kirby Lester counting machines. vi.Assists with automated or manual inventory processes that include but are not limited to inventory counts, medication ordering, stocking, checking for outdates, pulling outdates, pulling recalled medication, med room inspections, or any other activity related to the supply of VA medications. vii.Dispenses medications using ScriptPro automation.
Accurately interprets CPRS patient medication profiles. Is able to confirm prescription information in the VISTA or VISTA Imaging packages. Able to execute refills or other technician duties within VISTA. ix.Accurately enters or updates patient information in ScriptPro, CPRS or VISTA.
Accurately enters notes into CPRS using pharmacy templates or blank forms.
Comprehends and participates in procurement activities, inventory management, narcotic dispensing, mental health programs, secure messaging, overnight mail, partial fills, window dispensing, administrative reports, prescription review, incident reports, and so forth as delegated by supervisor. xii.Capable of sustained standing, walking, lifting and other procedures necessary to procure or delivery medications and supplies. Prioritizes workload to complete assignments on time.
Able to work in an organized and clean fashion.
Maintains adaptability and flexibility for various emerging roles and responsibilities in the medication distribution system. This is especially important with regards to new equipment, assignments, and changes in pharmacy workflow.
b. Pharmacy Phone System:
Able to use the Siemens phone system, CPRS, VISTA, and ScriptPro.
Maintains appropriate phone etiquette and professionalism.
Able to work independently in phone center locations.
Accurately collects and clarifies patient information.
Capable of synthesizing patient information to identify basic therapeutic, distributive, or medication related problems.
Understands when to alerts pharmacists for problems.
Communicates information accurately in CPRS or other format. viii. Completes calls and as needed follow up in a timely manner.
Seeks opportunity to support pharmacy operations when phone volume low.
c. Pharmacy Mail System:
Fills medication "to be mailed" in accordance with description provided in the medication distribution section.
Ensures prescription label matches mailing label and maintains accuracy in other software or paper systems.
d. Controlled Substances (CS):
Fills "CS medication" in accordance with description provided in the medication distribution section.
Accurately maintains a rolling inventory in Pyxis and performs a complete inventory every 72 hours per VA guidelines.
Able to run ScriptPro reports such as "Monthly CII Script Processing Detail Reports" or other reports as needed.
Ensures access to CS vault are limited to the appropriate staff.
Matches hardcopy prescriptions to prescription labels according to current federal and state requirements.
Monitors prescription orders for dispensing accuracy and communicates potential problems to supervisor.
Performs Pyxis and ScriptPro equipment maintenance as directed.
e. Medication Management System:
Assists the pharmacist with problem solving, patient care, or medication issues.
Assists in quality improvement projects as an individual or on assigned teams to improve pharmacy service.
Assists to complete required pharmacy reporting obligations as directed.
Maintains the physical security of the pharmacy and the security of electronic records.
Understands pharmacy SOPs and policy for general operations and inspections.
Understands waste streams for returned medications and medications to be destroyed.
Work Schedule: M-F 8am-4:30pm with rotating nights, weekends, holidays

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Experience. One year of post-secondary education, or 6 months of general experience, or student technician - a student enrolled in an approved nationally accredited pharmacy technician program for an occupation identified in 38 U.S.C. 7405(a)(1)(A) or (B) may be appointed on a temporary full-time, part-time or intermittent basis under the provisions of 38 U.S.C. 7405(a)(1)(D) for a period not to exceed two years or the duration of the individual's program, or combination of education and experience.
Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must be deemed at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. program by a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials.
Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
Grade Determinations: GS-06
Experience. One year experience at the next lower level GS-5.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to pharmacy practice.
Knowledge of preparation, storage and distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation.
Ability to use pharmacy information systems or operate pharmacy dispensing equipment.
Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
Ability to communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel.

Physical Requirements: The work involves long periods of moving, standing and pushing carts about the work unit. The work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting. The incumbent must be a mature, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful
situations, demonstrating cheerfulness, compassion, courtesy and concern for staff and patients. Must possesses math skills in order to convert medications to the correct dosing.
