The incumbent to the position is a Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader for the Facilities Section of Engineering Service and is responsible for the overall performance of the Facilities Section. He/she performs the following major duties and responsibilities on a regular and recurring basis. This position reports to the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor. ( Facilities Section)
Duties
The Cincinnati VA Medical Center is a two-division campus located in Cincinnati, Ohio and Fort Thomas, Kentucky serving 15 counties in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana with 6 Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Bellevue, KY; Florence, KY; Lawrenceburg, IN; Hamilton, OH; Clermont County, OH, and Georgetown, OH. Cincinnati VAMC also supports two off main campus locations in the Cincinnati area via an Eye Center and Mental Health Outreach Community Division.
Major Duties:
Painting of interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, structures, and equipment (portable, motorized, installed).
Building maintenance such as, the installation and changing of chalkboards, bulletin boards, drapery rods, window shades, white boards, privacy curtain tracks, marker boards, dispensers, etc.
Installation of drywall partitions and plaster or suspended acoustical ceilings.
Repair or replacement of doors, frames, windows, door hardware (such as locks, hinges, door closers, push-pull plates, kick plates, armor plates), and window hardware.
Refinishing and repairing of tabletops, desks, and cabinets with an application of Formica or wood veneer.
Laying up of brick or block walls, and the forming, placement, and finishing of concrete surfaces (such as, sidewalks or walls).
Patching, sealing, and repair of bituminous driveways and parking lots.
Plastering of walls and ceilings.
Installation of wall coverings (such as vinyl, wallpaper, contact paper, etc.).
Glazing performed on windows.
Lying of ceramic floor, epoxy, LVT, and wall tile.
Patching, sealing, repair and maintenance of all roofs. Determines location of all leaks and takes corrective action in sealing.
Maintenance and repair of building, facility operating equipment, and medical equipment.
Origination of facilities keying, repairing and installing all types of locks/lock sets. Rekeying facility as needed.
Maintain grounds by planting, cutting grass, weeding, trimming bushes/trees, empting trash cans and keeping trash picked up around facility.
Functions both at Cincinnati and Ft. Thomas Divisions.
Leads subordinate employees in the Facilities Section for a maximum of 50% of his/her time and leads the employees in the Mechanic Shop for a maximum of 25% of his/her times, Locksmith 15% and Grounds Section 10%.
Directs the removal, storage and the disposal of asbestos containing materials.
Performs work of other trades, such as; repair of wall repairs, piping insulation and accessories of refrigeration plants, air conditioning systems and installation of piping to boilers. Incumbent is responsible for the corrective and preventative maintenance for non-medical and building service equipment.
Responsible for the outside grounds area and the Cincinnati and Fort Thomas campuses, including items such as line striping, asphalt repairs and snow removal.
Performing the installation of equipment like that described above by planning and completing the routing and placement of systems leaking to the equipment, determining and placing the equipment at the proper levels and points in the system and joining, sealing and testing systems and equipment for proper leakage and operation
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 7:00am-3:00pm ( subject to 24 hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week emergency calls)

Physical Requirements:
Incumbent must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving walking, standing, bending, stooping, lifting, working overhead and crawling. Incumbent must be able to lift loads of up to eighty pounds. Frequently, work will be performed in cramped and awkward positions. Work performed is of a precise nature requiring prolonged concentration. Incumbent works at times under conditions of extreme stress and must be able to interact effectively with medical staff and perform work in a calm analytical manner
Working Conditions:
Incumbent is required to work in damp places, water, mud, close quarters, both indoors and outside. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of burns from hot water and steam while repairing insulation on steam piping and to strains, cuts and bruises while working on heavy pipe. Incumbent is prone to infection from unsanitary worksites, such as; sewers, waste traps, garbage disposals, grease traps and other bacteria breeding places. Subject to injury while using power operated equipment.
