This position is located in the Laboratory Services Branch, Northern Navajo Medical Center, Shiprock, New Mexico. The Medical Laboratory Aid is responsible for performing specific non-professional laboratory tasks in support of the department. This position reports to the Supervisory Medical Technologist.
Duties
Perform specimen collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques following standard laboratory practices.
Assist in the general laboratory by preparing specimens for analysis, labeling specimen tubes, preparing laboratory equipment.
Perform routine preventive maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment.
Perform basic laboratory testing. Prepare specimens for send out; prepare slides for gram stain.
Cleans lab glassware and equipment.
Performs critical cleaning procedures.
Assist with filing reports, delivery of completed reports to medical records.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education and Training
For GS-3: Successful completion of (a) a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (b) 1 year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or biological science.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-03: Six months of general experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject matter of a medical technician. To qualify for this position you must show in your resume that you possess this experience. Or
One year of education above high school including courses related to this position. To qualify for this position using education you must include a copy of your transcripts. Or
A combination of education above high school, including courses related to this position and experience that meets the requirements. To qualify for this position using a combination of education and experience you must include a copy of your transcripts as well as showing in your resume that you meet this experience.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
