The position is located at the Northern Navajo Medical Center, Division of Clinical Services, Medical Laboratory Branch in Shiprock, NM. Serves as a Medical Technician in the Clinical Laboratory Department with the duties of performing a variety of standardized routine procedures in the department. The position reports directly to the Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientists.
Duties
Performs relatively simple automated and relatively complex manual procedures in chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, microbiology, serology, immunology and specimen procurement and dispatch.
Performs routine type and screen, routine cross matching, routine antibody identification, and routine Blood Bank procedures as directed.
Operates and maintains clinical laboratory equipment ranging from simple to complex depending upon availability.
Performs required quality control, quality assurance procedures, as assigned.
Collects, process, and delivers specimens for analysis.
Processess reference lab reports for scanning.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Specialized Experience: For positions at GS-4 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.
OR
Education and Training: For GS-3: Successful completion of (a) a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (b) 1 year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or biological science.
For GS-4: Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for GS-3; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled.
For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-04: 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 to qualify for the GS-04. Examples Include: a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or b) technical support work in a closely related field that required application of the methods and techniques for the position of Medical Technician.
OR
2 years of education above the high school level with courses related to the occupation.
Specialized Experience for GS-04: With work being planned by supervisor and audited/reviewed; Using laboratory manuals for detailed instruction regarding techniques, procedures, reagents, stains, controls, normal values, etc. Setting up collection trays with supplies necessary for collection of blood and other specimens. General Experience: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
GS-05: One year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Experience includes technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position of Medical Technician
OR
Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study of at least 24 semester hours in subjects such as Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Banking, and Microbiology.
GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Experience includes (1) performing calibration, preventative maintenance and diagnostic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment; (2) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position of Medical Technician
GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: Experience includes (1) performing calibration, preventative maintenance and diagnostic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment; (2) preparing solutions, stains, reagents and media required for performing tests and examinations; (3) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position of Medical Technician.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
