This position is located in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, in the Southeast Alaska Network Team in Juneau, Alaska. Government housing is not available. Duties

As a Biologist, you will: Lead and develop long-term monitoring program for marine wildlife including marine mammals (sea otters and pinnipeds), seabirds, and their habitats in marine ecosystems in Alaska. Independently execute and lead complex field biology and ecological monitoring programs in remote marine ecosystems in Alaska. Produce written peer-reviewed monitoring protocols and journal publications, deliver oral presentations for scientific audiences and the public. Conduct data analyses and synthesis of ecological data using contemporary methods and modelling approaches. Provide and interpret information regarding marine wildlife population status, ecology, and policy to park managers in support of park resource stewardship and collaborate and interact with diverse staff and partners to implement program priorities and advance the understanding of park ecosystems

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/04/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following Basic Qualification Requirements AND the Minimum Qualification Requirement by the closing date of the announcement: BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. You must include transcripts. -OR- Combination of education and experience: Course work equivalent to a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline closely related to the position; plus, appropriate experience or additional course work. You must include transcripts and list the number of hours worked per week in your resume. - AND - MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Leading and developing long-term monitoring programs related to biological sciences including but not limited to marine mammals, seabirds, and marine ecosystems; designing long-term monitoring studies; developing study designs and conducting complex statistical analyses; independently planning, executing field work in remote regions with limited logistical support; publishing in peer-reviewed journals. You must list number of hours worked per week in your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. Degree Ph.D. or equivalent Doctoral degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position. You must include transcripts. -OR- Combination of education and experience: To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 36 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. They must equal 100% to qualify using this option. You must include transcripts and list the number of hours worked per week in your resume. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
