The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Safety Division of the Office of Protection Services. The Safety and Occupational Health Manager serves and is recognized as a Smithsonian-wide expert in Occupational Safety and Health, responsible for developing, planning, coordinating and implementing a comprehensive occupational safety program.
Duties
The Safety and Occupational Manager will serve as a technical expert in safety and occupational health, providing technical information and support for the planning, implementation, administration, and audit/evaluation of the Smithsonian's safety and health program.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

Experience
Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Certificates
Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP). Applicants may also qualify based on their education and/or experience.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
In addition to the basic qualification's requirements above : You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system related to the work of this position. This specialized experience is defined as planning and implementing requirements of an occupational safety program for work activities and environments; reviewing and providing guidance on occupational safety policies and guidelines; and investigating accidents, incidents, and reports of unsafe/unhealthful conditions.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
