About the Position: Position may be filled as a temporary promotion or detail NTE 3 years by a current permanent Army employee. Temporary promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Position may be made permanent without further competition. Employees are not eligible for a detail in the OCONUS area unless already residing in the same overseas area (foreign or non-foreign) as the position being filled.
Duties
Plans and schedules periodic surveys of unit/activity safety programs and facilities.
Provides advice and guidance to commanders, supervisors, and safety representatives in a wide variety of military, industrial, and administrative functions
Identifies, analyzes, and evaluates various hazards involving the use of ammunition and explosives during combined arms live fire training exercises
Recommends to management the application of specific techniques, methods, and procedures to eliminate or control unsafe acts or conditions identified in surveys or control unsafe acts or conditions identified through mishap information sources
Initiates and carries out safety education activities, promoting safety awareness through safety councils and committees, providing safety training sessions and briefings, preparing safety literature and promotional materials
Investigates and analyzes accidents and hazardous conditions to determine origin, causes, and contributing elements and provides follow-up guidance to commanders, supervisors, managers, workers, and labor unions.
Coordinates activities involving procurement of required safety equipment, determination of respirator requirements

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires frequent exposures to hazards and discomforts such as moving machine parts, irritant chemicals, high level noises, adverse weather conditions and high temperatures.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experienc requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience:One year of specialized experience which includes experience in safety with training and inspections, administering a safety and occupational health program for the installation, planning and organizing assignments in the development of safety programs and providing safety services to satellite and tenant activities.

OR
Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
