This position is located in the BLM Oregon State Office, Coos Bay District Office. The primary purpose of this position is to operate one or more types of gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction heavy equipment in flat or rolling terrain environments.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Conducting site and facility maintenance including but not limited to, Recreation sites, Road Maintenance Shops and Communication Sites; maintaining and repairing sites and structures with an emphasis on public and employee health and safety, to a standard that reflects highly on the organization.
Ensuring all department needs relating to heavy equipment operation and transportation are met; and utilizing tractors, engineering equipment, motor vehicles, chainsaws, hand, and power tools to accomplish daily tasks as well as special projects such as carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical, cement finishing, and custodial.
Developing and maintaining good working relationships with other departments, site hosts, volunteers, and the general public; and developing partnerships to reach district goals and build program support.
Determining the type, amount, and location of work to be accomplished under the direction of a supervisor; heading-up assigned projects while maintaining good communication with supervisors, co-workers/peers; and evaluating and prioritizing projects based on health/safety hazards, structural issues, and aesthetics.
Requirements

- May be required to complete background investigation.

- You may be required to occasionally travel overnight away from home. You must be eligible to obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

- You will be required to obtain/maintain a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements to operate government owned vehicles and heavy equipment for the duration of the appointment.
Qualifications
To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: Operating gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as road graders, bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, or trench diggers in simple terrains; (2) Operating equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials; (3) Conducting routine minor or lower-graded maintenance in the areas of carpentry, masonry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and/or welding; (4) Interpreting instructions/specifications associated with heavy equipment operation.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly climbing in and out of different machines and pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation. Work is strenuous because of the equipment operated, and the adjustments made. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating the equipment. You will be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning equipment and tools.
Working Conditions: The operation of gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment increases exposure and risk of injury. You will work both inside and outside and be exposed to hot and humid weather and/or extremely cold weather with temperatures ranging from below 0 to above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks may create hazardous conditions. The operator is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, oils, solvents, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes caused by equipment or vehicles. You will be frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises, and strains while operating equipment. You will be required to follow all prescribed safety practices and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective hearing devices and hard hats to prevent injury.
