About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Duties
Serves as a Shift Supervisor for the Security Guard force assigned under the authority of the Senior Commander at IMCOM supported installations.
Exercises direct supervision of the activities of a guard force shift responsible for providing 24 hour maximum security measures against theft, fire, accident, pilferage, trespass, sabotage, and espionage.
Makes decisions according to the nature of perceived threat such as demonstrators or other organized subversive actions.
Develops training plans based on approved training courses and regulatory requirements.
Supervises training for guard personnel in the use of weapons, protection against espionage, sabotage, and other organized subversive actions.
Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
Receives and reviews daily reports from subordinates and ensures the correction of reported irregularities.
Sets employee standards for performance and prepares performance evaluations based on employee compliance.
Recommends promotions, reassignments, and sustained or outstanding performance awards.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
- This position is supervisory, a one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
- This position requires certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
- This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Incumbent must undergo and pass annual medical exams of physical, emotional and mental stability. Standard for medical exams are prescribed in AR 190-56 "The Army Civilian Police and Security Guard Program".
- The incumbent will be required to maintain physical conditioning and pass an annual physical agility test (PAT) as outlined in Army Regulation 190-56 "The Army Civilian Police and Security Guard Program".
- Incumbent must wear the Department of the Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform IAW AR 190-56, maintain a high state of appearance and hygiene.
- Incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer such as chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment.
- May be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
- In accordance with AR 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program apply.
- The incumbent must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminals.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Protecting personnel and/or property against threats such as fire, theft, damage, accident, and/or trespass; (2) Conducting patrols of restricted and/or limited access areas; and (3) Leading and/or supervising personnel and/or projects. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
